Sam,
thank you so much for the reply. First, we have all the gear needed, open water rated kayaks and have been in the big lakes many times before. Just never crossed to the island. We kayaked out to the bridge and under it, which was awesome.
We are launching NORTH of the furthest north ferry and should be well out of their way. (which is Sheplers and they are amazing people. super helpful and a God sent to us)
Since posting this I have found some answers to some of my questions. Water current is negligible, wind can be a serious issue (good for you sailors, bad for us yakers) ?maybe we get some kayak sails??
Storing our kayak has been one of the harder issues. What do we do with them when we get there? We are staying 3 days. and I've emailed/called every hotel/b&b and inn on the island and generated a list of about 8 that will store our kayaks for us. (if any one needs that list, i would be glad to share it. They were super polite and very very helpful. wonderful people).
the last issue is like you mention, where to take out. 90% is private land. But that's nothing new for us. We kayak rivers a lot and ALL the land on either side of the rivers is privately owned and has those gaudy orange "no tress passing" signs every where (really mucks up the scenery). I sympathize with them not wanting trespassers but after seeing 300 of those darn things, we get the point. Sorry, i diverge. ON the island we found 2 places we can take out one is a state park and the other is just land next to the road. We hop out, assemble the cart. put the yaks on the cart and look like idiots pulling two kayaks through the main street.
As for the kayak rental places. They can be hit or miss. They are super helpful as they are kayakers and love the sport or they are just in it for the money. The one on the island ?great turtle? wont even give us the time of day. I called them, "NO we wont store them (didnt ask them to), and ill find out about letting you take out at our dock" - no response from them.
Thanks for your input.
Kevin
