Hello, Where are you sailing this weekend (assuming you are sailing)? I am making my first overnight trip. The family and I are packing the boat and sailing across the Long Island Sound from Mt. Sinai to Milford Ct. We are staying in the Milford Landing Marina. We leave Sunday and return Monday. Fair winds and weather to all. Barry Barry Lenoble Noble Prize, 1986 Newport 28 Mt. Sinai, NY

Crossing our fingers...

If weather holds up and a couple of maintenance issues are resolved, we plan on getting to downtown Jax Friday night overnight. Out the jetties to do some coastal sailing for a few hours and back into intercoastal for Saturday overnight and then back up St. John's Sunday morning.

Jim you lucky dog!!! I did that trip last year with out 260 and had a wonderful time. Actually we thought about going back this year and spending more time around the sound, but it does not look like it's in the cards.

Whiskeytown Regatta

Sailing an H-216 in the largest regatta in upstate California in beautiful Whiskeytown Lake. Leave Friday to set up boat and locate bouys (they have permanent racing bouys in the lake that look like hazard or 5 mph bouys...plus they also have hazard bouys and 5 mph bouys. Tough to locate the racing bouys a couple miles away!) Race Sat and Sun.

Racing on Saturday

There is a race from Annapolis, MD to St. Michaels, MD. Its a 3 hour trip to Annapolis from the marina. After we finish the race (and hopefully win), we anchor and go into town for crabs. Then its back on the boat and back to the marina. We should be back by midnight so Sunday there will be plenty of time to mow the grass. Mark

Started out as just a day sail.

We had originally planned on just daysailing in St Joe Bay on Saturday. Last night we were down on the boat finishing up getting her legal (wife in dingy painting the name on the stern). Several more couples arrived to prep their boats and now we are four couples strong, overnighting tonight (Fri) then heading out for a raft up Saturday. Big party on the beach! Life just doesn't get any better than this!!

Sunday I'll be out all day between Port Gamble and Foul Weather Bluff. If the wind is good, I may try to go as far as the north end of Marrowstone Island. It will be the first sail of the year (finally)and with my new sails. I probably won't sleep tonight or tomorrow night.

I'll follow...

I'll probably follow Tom around for a while. But will retreat to the marina as the alcohol content of the lake rises after lunch.

So did you end up going?

We didn't go to Cowichan Bay. Instead we went to Bedwell Harbour On Pender Island. Lovely weather and a great sail home, 8 kts beating to windward! Gotta love that!

and I shouldn't have

Went out Saturday afternoon. Anchored in the Galveston Bay that night. Was planning on heading out into the Gulf and try some fishing while I was out there the next day. About 4 am Sunday morning a thunderstorm came through with gusts up to 50 kts from the west. Where I was anchored, I had protection from the south where the wind normally comes from and was that night. The current must have been doing something because in the middle of the night I realized that I was no longer anchored from the bow, but from the keel (rode wrapped around keel). I tried to motor around it but didn't seem to help any. Gave up and went to bed because it's happened before and worked itself out, but when that storm came and woke me up, I though for sure the boat was going to capsize. 50 kts blowing against the beam and rode pulling the keel the other way. I closed all the hatches and companion way to make the boat as leak proof as possible and thought that when the boat would tip, the rode would come free. Later as I sat in the cabin with the boat heeled about 60%, I realized I had no idea how badly the rode was wrapped around the keel and if it would come off. I was thinking that staying in the boat may have been a bad idea if the boat tipped over, the mast hit bottom and rode still wrapped around keel. Well, end result was the storm passed in 1.5 hours and all was ok except I lost a bit of bottom paint and the bimini needs some work now. Later that morning it took me two hours to get my anchor out. It was dug real deap. Between the rocking of the boat, the windless, the motoring, I finally got it up but it must have been 3 feet deep in mud. I guess the rode and anchor passed the test. Needless to say, I went back to the slip after that and slept at the dock last night :)

Franklin,

A trip like that holds memories far longer than a mundane cruise. You might say you made memories this weekend. r.w.landau

Fireworks on Herring Bay

Jim: Herrington Harbour south was shooting fireworks for the holiday on Saturday night. We were just coming out of Eastern bay watching the sun and Venus set. Once it was dark, the fireworks started. We were about 4.5 mile away and had U2 on the stereo. Great accompaniment. We came in 7th out of 20. Not bad. It was my first time working the bow alone. Only a few screwups but they are mistakes I WON't make again. I'll get faster when the skipper gets that second coat of non-skid applied. Mark
