Have you ever seen a bear at the Apostle Islands while anchoring out in the bay? If so, how hungry to they look?

If you want bears...

If you want bears, come to northwestern NJ. The black bear population is so out of control that bears are in suburban backyards on a daily basis in dozens of towns. Don't know about the Apostle Island bears, but I can tell you that in general bears are always hungry! ;-) Ron Mehringer h26 Hydro-Therapy

A common sight

We saw a young yearling black bear working the shoreline at an anchorage in the Apostle Islands last summer. We also saw bear scat, other signs, and a bear eating bluebarries in the same bay. There are a number of campsites in the islands. Each has a steel food box to store supplies in. As long as you don't have any food in your tent (or the smell of food) a black bear won't bother you. The rangers there can advise you on precautions, and the recent activities of the local population. Of course, riding at anchor, there is no chance of a close encounter. We enjoyed the beautiful islands, forests, beaches, bald eagles, and sailing of the Apostles. It would have been nice if the flies had stayed away, but we were pleasantly surprised that they were the household variety, and not biters! We'll go back for sure! David Lady Lillie

Wake up call

I encoutered a bear on one of the islands at 5:30 in the morning when I went ashore to use the facilities. As my freinds tell me, he was more afraid of me - we both ran in different directions!
