We are new to sailing but have already learned a little bit about hand sewing. We've got some threads unraveling and wonder what the best way to mend the sails. Is there a handheld sewing machine that works?
Here ya go: automatic awl http://www.amazon.com/C-S-Osborne-Automatic-Awl/dp/B000PSFHP0 for double needle stitching .... use a sail needle and thread to catch the bottom loop made into the fabric with the auto-awl. You thumb on the thread spool on the awl controls stitch tension. Best is to use V-92 dacron polyester thread because of its relatively larger 'thickness'. In a 'pinch', use thin strand dental floss.
A standard (triangular point) sail needle and waxed sailmaker's twine will cause large sailneedle holes in woven dacron ... unnecessary, IMO
