Rouges Gallery

There is a fascinating two CD set. It is called Rogue's Gallery. It is a Hal Willner Production. It is pirate ballads, sea songs and chanteys. A little booklet comes with it explaining the history of each song. It is done by multiple performers. Beware, some of the songs are beautiful and some are the filthiest songs I have ever heard. Overall, it is great listening.

Jolly Rogers/Bilge Pumps/Buffet

If you like sea shanties then try the Bilge Pumps and the Jolly Rogers. Both are excellent groups. Of course you have to bring Jimmy along. There is nothing else that can be said there. Also, try Jim Morris. Especially Yankee Trader! Nothing better than a nice long reach in about 12 knots of air with the Autohelm on and Good songs on the stereo!

Hey Guys - what about Links to the songs?

Knowing the song names are all well and good, but what about saving some time for those who have never heard of the song(s) and give us some links to hear it/them? It was easy to find links to the ones I mentioned via Google and You Tube. In fact, on second thought, You Tube was so easy I wouldn't waist time with Google.

Nelleke and I love Eileen Quinn's cruising ballads

On Eileen's website (see link below) you can sample several songs from her CDs. She is a wonderful lyricist and guitar player with uncommon insight into what makes cruisers tick. Although clearly describing the macho world of ocean cruising from a decidedly female perspective, her great sense of humor always manages to take the sharp edge off. Once you have heard a ballad such as "get me through this night" you will remember it next time you're out there. Have fun! Flying Dutchman

Brent Burns... Buffet wanna be

A friend of mine just loaned this CD to me last week, "Tropical Nuts" by Brent Burns. He seems to be a Jimmy Buffet wanna be, and some of his stuff is pretty good, if not just down right comical! The song, "Jamaicanmecrazi" will make you want to hit the water and raise the sails. It's probably the only "serious" song... the rest are just fun... and very true to life! Get you a copy and enjoy!

Favourite sailing songs

Aboard "Ever After" two of our particualr favourites are The Irish Descendants "Gypsies and Lovers" (sample link below) and Sailing on the Sea (An East Coast compilation featuring JP Cormier, highland heights, Gordie Sampson, Lennie Gallant, The Fables, The Ennis Sisters, MacKeel, The Celtic Connection, McGinty, John Gracie, Rita and Mary Rankin and Aselin Debison.) Of course, being from Canada's East Coast may slightly affect our opinion...

Great Big Sea

The north east, including Canada's Maritime provinces have a long tradition of producing great musicians. Great Big Sea is but one example. Their songs are many on my iPod and fit the many moods of sailing. If you are not familiar with their large body of work, check out their web site and have a listen.

Buffett and Great Big Sea

I suppose I'm one of 3 people who know of Great Big Sea in the States (at least up until now). Jack Hinks is my favorite of theirs, when it comes to sailing. But Jimmy Buffett probably is tops with One Particular Harbor, Changes in Latitude, Pirate Looks at 40, Weather is Here....
