Driving to work this morning I was listening to Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young's Greatest Hits double CD. That 'Southern Cross' tune has got to be one of the best ever sailing tunes. Makes me want to run away to sea. What are your favourite ocean tunes? Pete

Wooden Ships - Crosby, Stills and Nash

"Wind on the Water"- David Crosby/Graham Nash "Cool Change"-Little River Band "Horse Latitudes" (spoken poem)-Doors "Ride Captain Ride"-Blues Image. This one doesn't seem nautical in spite of the "sea" theme in the lyrics. Cool song though.

These few come to mind Buffett: Son of a Son of a Sailor A Pirate Looks at Forty He Went to Paris (because he finally went to the islands) Avalon, by Roxy Music (because it reminds me of sailing to Catalina)

Southern Cross

That is a great song, trouble is, the lyrics don't work in the real world but who cares...;-) Three of us idiots climbed to the top of the mainmast on Neil Youngs square rigger when he did a concert in Oakland '88.The vessel was tied up at South Beach Harbor where we three were liveaboard wharf rats lol. Sloop John B. yeah, Beach Boys always have been a favorite of mine, in fact all of what you boys listed are good, real good. My all time favorite is "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" always brought that along on my Gorden Lightfoot album when doing a delivery. Great to put on when the sea is up, you're slamming into waves and things are flying round the cabin, the louder the better....crew loved it! My all time favorite sea-tale is "And The Sea Will Tell" by Vincent Bugliosi (he proscuted the manson family) have some connections to the people involved to the incidents, courtroom drama, and was in Hawaii when it happened. Tristan Jones was good, but methinks a mite heavy on the fiction end of it...;-) Anybody have any good sea tales, books?

Billy Joel

Billy Joel's Downeaster Alexa always works for me as we literally sail the waters he mentions in the song. Rob

"Seemann" & "Sloop John B"

"Seemann, Deine Heimat ist" Deine Heimat ist das Meer, Deine Freunde sind die Sterne, ..... There are a number of versions out but the ones I like are sung by Lolita and the other by Freddi Quinn. Amazon link: http://www.amazon.com/Seemann-Deine-Heimat-I-Lolita/dp/B000024WKR The raters reviews were a good read. You Tube Lolita version (lip sync version) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rKmcEg9hqCk&feature=related 5 stars for the music, 1/2 star for the video! And 3 stars for the peg-legged pirate in the video. You Tube (USA version with some English lyrics dubbed in): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4avMt39iXhA&feature=related You Tube by a Freddy Quinn wanabe: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4H5MitXmJgk (not bad for an impersonator) and "The Sloop John B" Wikipedia link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sloop_John_B

Old Time Sailor Songs

For my two young boys (6 and 11) we just adore an a cappella group called "The Corsairs." They sing (using 4 or 5 part harmony) many old sailing songs including things like "16 Men on a Dead Man's Chest," "Blow the Man Down," "Drunken Sailor," "The Last Shanty," "Sailor's Prayer," "Swing a Cat," "Away Rio," Maggie May," "Blow Ye Winds" and on and on and on - they have 8 or 9 albums out that each have loads of songs The tunes are fun and easy to remember for singing while on deck or arounda campfire Also if you get the album "The Green One" there is some great stuff at the end that we've turned into a game while under way - basically, you can sing the words to Amazing Grace to nearly any other song. . .so we do that and make people guess the tune :)

www.boatsongs.com The Legend of the Lost Soul is a song written about Bob Bitchin (editor of Latts and Atts magazine). Just about made me quit my job and do the same thing.
