Hi All, I've been thinking about taking the ASA courses to qualify for bareboat chartering, and wondered if anyone had any experiences/reccomendations they'd care to share about schools. Thanks, Rob Hays

J World

J World is great training, albeit for small boats. But the fundamentals are the same, and the instructors well versed. No one who comes out of J World is lacking for confidence, which may be the best testimonial.

Not Really

Rob, ASA Bareboat "Certification" isn't a required mandate by most of the major charter agencies. I've chartered with the Moorings, TMM, Sun, and VIP with only the ASA Basic and some sailing experience. All of the charter companies will ask you to submit a "resume" of your sailing experience. The more you have, the more they'll be comfortable with you. If lieu of experience, though, the ASA course may be an acceptable substitute. Fair winds, Steve S/V Options

ASA Schools

There are ASA schools all over the country. Ten years ago the wife and I started our sailing adventure by taking the ASA courses at Cedar Mills on Lake Texhoma. It is nice to learn the correct way to do things instead of picking up bits and pieces along the way. There will be classroom instruction and "on the boat" instruction. After you have gone through the courses, you will know twice as much about the rules of the road as the typical sailor. Go for it. Jim

Bare Boat

Took the Offshore Sailing (Colgate) live aboard course in Fla. It was great training and got a week to sail the Keys in a large welll equipped at the same time.

J World

Practical Sailor rates J World as the best sailing school in the country. In addition to the basic and racing courses taught on J 80s, they also teach cruising and bareboat courses on larger boats. I've taken courses at three schools; they were far and away the best and I sent the rest of my family there (J World in Annapolis).

NYSS

I had a great experience with a weekend bareboat charter course at New York Sailing School in New Rochelle NY. Reasonably priced n(pretty cheap in comparison actually), and sailing on the lower Long Island Sound was a blast! So if you want to make it a I Love NY/ take the course double, I heartily recommend them! Roger

vacation and learn

Took a weeklong coures in the Virgin Islands many years ago. It was a great vacation and qualified for 2 of the 3 classes for bareboat - I took the 1st class before I left... Most of the charter companies will run them. I went through Sunsail and had a great time.

Thanks!

Thanks everyone for the reccomendations. I've been reading the websites for various schools, and now have some excellent suggestions to follow up on.
