I was thinking of towing my Hunter 260 down to San Francisco and sailing the bay. Can anyone recommend a centrally located marina that I can launch from and stay at for maybe 10 days. I think it would be a trip of a life time.

There are several that have guest docks and are great to sail out of.

South Beach Harbor phone 415-496-4911 you may want to talk to them well in advance as they have limited slips and it is at ATT park where the Giants play and they fill up fast.

Berkeley Marina phone510-981-6740 they have lots of guest slips.

If you don't mind motoring a little there is Marina Village, Grand marina, Alameda marina Jack london marina.

Good luck Gary

SF Bay....

It's been some time since we sailed the Bay, I agree with sfgary!

I would also say that a stop at Pier 39 would be fun! We often went there for a couple of days when guests were with us on our boat. I would call on the VHF and they would always sai they were full. But when I said I was 27 foot, they always had a spot for us, even on the 3 & 4 of July!! What fun it was. Also, the Maritime Museum is an easy walk from there. And the "sticky buns" early AM are TOOOOooooo GGGOOOODDDDDDD!.:D

Just an idea.

To add to sfgary you can also launch at Marina Bay Yacht Harbor in Richmond off of Interstate 580. Plenty of slips, free ice, nice facilities, sailing school and lots of Hunter sailboats on D dock and a few restaurants in walking distance. From there you can take day and overnight trips to Tiburon (recommend lunch at Sam’s overlooking SF), South Beach (south of the bay bridge with lots of restaurants), Sausalito, outside the Golden Gate bridge, Coyote Point (south of San Francisco), Alameda, Benicia, etc. If you do that stop by berth D43 in Richmond Bay Yacht Harbor Marina or berth 311/321 in the Benicia Marina for a beer. If you are around on Wednesday in Richmond during your trip you can join us on a Hunter 31 for a beer can race and $8 dinner afterwards with the Richmond Yacht Club.

Enjoy your trip.

Welcome, you'll love it.

For making your stay more pleasant, buy Kimball Livingston's Sailing the Bay.

A few charts would also help, unless you have a preprogrammed GPS.

There are a lot of resources out there about launching ramps. Don't know if you anchor out, but Clipper Cove is a real nice spot.

My dad keeps his Farr at Paradise Cay in Tiburon. Not sure if they have a ramp though. He used to keep it at another place called Loch Lomond marina in San Rafael, but the traffic getting there got annoying for him. If you're going to live aboard, I would reccomend LL because they have a ramp, plenty of parking and a supermarket there at the marina. I've never sailed anything small in the bay, but on some days the wind pushes my dads 58` around pretty roughly. The good thing about the north bay is its pretty well protected by the coastal range and wind is usually half of what it is the bay or closer to SF.

If you have not sailed SF Bay, be prepared to reef. If the wind is blowing in your marina it is wise to put in your reef before you leave your slip.

It is a wonderful place to sail so enjoy your trip.

I'm not sure if you are coming from north south or east (if it's the west, you don't need a launch ramp, you're already in the water!) but I have always used Marina Bay in Richmond. It's easy to get to, you pay 10 bucks at an automated gate to get to the launch ramp and you can leave your vehicle and trailer for a week if you rent a slip. If you're a member of a yacht club, you get a discount rate for the week on the slip too. Nice facilities, showers etc.

Sfr,

One other note that should be of interest, I think some one else might have mentioned it, the weather!

Bring all types of clothing. One 4th of July we started in swimsuits and sweating. We were becalmed later in the day. At another point, all reefs were in, rail down and in fowl weather cloths and FREEZING!!!! I kid you not, all on the same day! And guess what, it was the 4th of July!!!

And as was said in another note, Clipper Cove is very nice!

Yep, weather will get you there. Slight chill, low wind in the AM.. Warm, moderate wind midday.. Then when that fogs rolls in in the afternoon, the chill comes back and wind blows hard.

We're in Marina Bay in Richmond right now. Sun's out, but it was jackets across The Slot and shorts and T shirts here. Great place to visit, many slips available. And great sailing, pick your weather! Really. Read that book I suggested, it's a fun read - I re-read it once a year whether I need to or not, like showers... :)

You say centrally located... That leaves out the marinas down the Alameda/Oakland estuary. However, these are more comfortable to stay in because of less wind. The Berkeley marina is very nice but very windy. There are two marinas in Emeryville - Emery Cove (private) and the Emeryville city marina. They are right next to each other, and you're right on the bay. The city marina is a little less windy and also next to a nice little park. I'd recommend that one if you're going to live on the boat... and if you're interested in staying in the east bay.
