Just launched my mac 26m. Anchoring near the sd yacht club. Any suggestions for interesting destinations appreciated. Will be here for 2 week s before returning arizona. LOng drive but as far as lake tahoe. Best marinas for gas and grub also helpful.

So many things to see and do here in San Diego! For one of the best views in town "dock and dine" at the Bali Hai restaurant on Shelter Island. Try their infamous Mai Tai's, but beware, they are potent! Other dock and dines are Anthony's Fish Grotto and Joe's Crab Shack. Of course you need to travel down to Glorieta Bay, pass under the Coronado Island bridge and anchor in front of one of the beaches to BBQ, swim and enjoy. Check out Hotel del Coronado while you are there. Very famous San Diego Hotel. There is also a dock at the Coronado Ferry Landing, but it can be rough waters. However, there are a slew of restaurants and shops you can visit. The concerts at the Embarcadero are almost over, but the season finale is Labor Day weekend with the "1812 Tchaikovsky Spectacular", complete with the San Diego Symphony and fireworks. Anchor in front of the Embarcadero and enjoy the show. Show starts at 7:30 Friday through Sunday. Since you are here awhile head up to Mission Bay and anchor in Mariner's Cove. No permit needed. While cruising about Mission Bay, be aware that some of the bridges are impassable with a sailboat, so your sailing area is limited. Dock and dine at the Hyatt Islandia. Hope this gives you a few ideas. We have our boat in a slip for the summer and it is our "floating condo" while we spend time downtown. Enjoy your trip!

I spend a lot of weekends anchored in Glorietta bay on Coronado. There is a nice little beach on the golf course side that's pretty quiet and pretty in the mornings. Great place to run some energy outta the dog if you have one.

For eating the last poster hit on all the major ones, though I'll add that the dock at Anthonys (right next to the Star of India) is definitely the roughest, and the dock is only on one side so your boat gets pounded pretty hard. Bring lots of fenders. I much prefer the ferry landing, as there is more variety in food and I enjoy walking around the beach and parks there more. Also the dock has about 12 or so slips which means there's almost always space. It also means you can run some spring lines from the side of your boat not against the dock diagonally forward to pull it away and keep it from beating against the big rubber bumpers they have on it. I've docked there for several hours without the boat ever touching the dock, even with some pretty big wave action.

Also if you want to stay somewhere with a little more amenities than an anchor the police dock in shelter island has visitor slips for $26 per night ($1 per foot). Water and power at the dock, bathrooms and shower on shore.

I like the idea of the spring lines. Will definitely do that next time we dock at the Ferry Landing. We didn't last time and got pretty banged up. Thanks for the tip!

Yeah my first couple times there were kinda rough. The docks are just at the right height to catch under the rub rail when the boat goes up and the dock goes down. Thankfully all the slips have plenty of cleats so if you run lines from the boat heading back down the dock, you can spring everything forward and away to one of the cleats on the main dock going across your bow and keep the boat out and safe.

Thanks for all the helpful advice. And to Stinkbug for sharing his Catalina island anchoring adventure. We too had considered making the trip but can see now we are woefully under prepared. I think we will stay in and around the bay for the remaining time we are here. One fellow mentioned that even a trip to Mission Bay should be carefully considered as the kelp beds can be treacherous.

Hey Jim, I'll be putting my boat in the water and going for a sail tomorrow morning. Gonna launch from Coronado in Glorietta bay hopefully around 9:30-10am. Will probably hang out in Glorietta for a little while, anchor and maybe do some swimming off the little beach there before going for a little sail around the bay. Guess you've seen pics of my boat in the other thread so feel free to give me a shout if you see us on the water.

Great. I will look for you. Couldn't find any pictures of your boat. I've got the blue hull. Is
Glorietta Bay just passed the bridge next to the Silver Strand? Didn't know one could anchor there and swimming would be great.

I was wondering if that was you that sailed passed us near the midway today. Nice sayin hello in passing! Yes, if you didn't find it already Glorietta is just under the bridge, then directly to starboard. During the day people anchor all over the golf course (starboard) side and fool around. Today it was pretty insane in there with just piles of boats, and even one sea plane. There is also a small anchorage just past the bend also on the golf course side where you can stay overnight if you get a permit (free)

Think that was us. We dropped anchor in gloritta bay. Saw the sea plane as well. Not sure how he took off. Had a good sail back to our slip in west harbor marina. Maybe meet some other time
