Jimmy Buffett?!
I can't say as that I have any intentional rituals, but I really can't remember a day of sailing without at least one Jimmy Buffett tape or CD since my wife and I have been sailing together. Just something about the intro to "Latitudes and Attitudes" that makes you remember why you sail -- to escape the everyday drudgery of middle America!!

When I leave
When leaving the boat I always: 1. Close up and lock the companionway, 2. Walk to the car, 3. Realize that I've left my keys, wallet, or sunglasses inside the boat, 4. Walk back to the boat, 5. Unlock everything and retrieve whatever it was, 6. Go back to the car and go home. Now that I know it's a ritual, I won't get so frustrated! LaDonna, after reading this, are you sure that you don't have any rituals?

Well, not that I'm anal or anything...
...but I have memorised the checklist after performing it for so many years on the last boat. One of the truly enjoyable parts of sailing for me, the prep and the cleanup. Now I have a new boat (after sailing the last one for 13 years) and I'm completely at a loss for my checklist. I gotta get a new routine in place for this boat. Two things I've always done and will continue to do: 1. A silver dollar under the mast step (the same one for a lot of years but it's still under the step of the boat I own in another location so this boat gets a new one) 2. All loose change (and I try to make sure to have some on board at all times) over the side when leaving the dock as a token to Maui to (hopefully) pay for a safe trip out and back. Yeah, occasionally I have to owe him if I have nothing/guest has nothing - but I do pay it the next trip out. Man, I guess anal is too kind! David s/v kupono

Pre trip stuff
At the top of my checklist I try to remember to ask God to give us a good, safe outing. When we sail to Catalina Island we always ask for safe passage, fair winds, and to see a lot of critters (dolphins, whales, sea lions, etc.). Been praying this way for several years and it works!

Check on the Check list
Got to be Bernoulli in there somewhere. 22 years an Army Aviator should have taught me to use a check list. But it was an 80 mile drive to ensure the "bilg pump to auto" task was done. It wasn't, and neither was the shore power! Check list was created and is followed.

Share your checklist?
A number of you have mentioned checklists, esp. Mr. Huhta with some specifics. As a pilot, I too firmly beleive in them (keeps the nice paint on the bottom of the plane from getting scratched). Anyone willing to share their checklist I'd love to have it - I pick up my first "new" boat this Friday!! (Cat 270). Thanks!

This site has some very helpful checklists... the airline pilot in our home (notice how many pilots also sail?) really appreciated them!
