Got a chance to go sailing on San Francisco Bay, May 7. This was a first for me, I have been an east coast sailor all of my life. Have to thank my brother in-law Bob for setting me up with Gary Hall. Must say I had a ball and ready to go back and do it again and again. Jim S/V Java

Bad news Jim!

Jim: I have bad news for you. They did a bait and switch on you. The weather that you encounted is like this is the fall. The warmer the weather is in the rest of California the crappier it is in the bay. You could have expected to have your foulies and life jackets on most of the time this time of the year. When it is good in the bay, it is great! We are glad you enjoyed yourself!

Steve's right, but... some good news too

... it is consistent and you can plan on it. Early mornings are pretty quiet and then it will build into late afternoon. It is not at all unusual to have 30 kt gusts in the slot at 2 or 3 p.m. in July. Depending on the tides, Latitude 38 runs an annual "sail around the Bay" story about an ideal route. Start on an outgoing tide and run through Racoon Straits toward the Golden Gate Bridge in the morning while it is still fairly quiet (motor if you must), then make the turn and do a downwind run along the cityfront, wave at the tourists on Pier 39 as you fly by, and then turn for home. But unless you like wet and cold, you probably want to avoid the slot between Angel Island and Treasure Island in mid-afternoon in July. If the forecast calls for 100 degrees over the hill in the valley, it will blow in the Bay. And you'll be cold and wet. You can duplicate the experience of sailing in San Francisco in the summer by standing in an ice cold shower and tearing up thousand dollar bills (picture those sails ripping)... Have fun, see you on the Bay. When it is good, it is absolutely stunning. S. Good News

You guys are right - Gary told

Me that I should enjoy this, for it is unusual to have this kind of weather. Then later in the week the fog rolled back in and the temps dropped. Still fun... Jim S/V Java

wrong bridge

A little nitpick on the web page you linked to: The eighth picture has the caption "Oakland Bay Bridge up ahead". That picture is actually of the Golden Gate Bridge, with Alcatraz in the foreground. The Bay Bridge can be seen in another photo on your web page. For comparison, its suspension span has more towers, isn't a red color, and has downtown San Francisco at one end and Yerba Buena Island at the other.

Weird Weather That Weekend

That weekend, the Bay area had perfect "south of the border" weather to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. We were doing the Vallejo Season Opener that weekend and the normal down wind run to Vallejo was actually a beat into a warm northerly that was the result of a high pressure system over Nevada/Oregon. Sunday's normal beat back down to the Bay turned into a run that decreased in wind pressure the closer we got to the Bay. Once on the Bay, nada, zilch, nothing. We wound up motoring home after the race. You really ought to come out and visit us on a normal summer weekend when it is cold, wet and blowing like stink.
