Has anyone sailed on Kentucky Lake? How friendly is it for sailboats? Are the winds good? Any problems with access or powerboats? Thanks

Sailing Kentucky Lake

Kentucky Lake is excellent Sailing. I have my Catalina 34 at Green Turtle Bay which is on Lake Barkley. Barkley is too shallow for anything but a dingy. We take the canal from Barkley to Kentucky Lake. There is a large variety of sailboats on Kentucky Lake. Kentucky Dam Village Marina and Lighthouse Landing are on opposite sides of the Lake near the lock & dam. On a good day, the winds will be out of the SW at 10 to 15. On an excellent day they will pipe up to 20! When that happens, the lake is left to the sailboats and the powerboats head for shore. Lots of beautiful bay to drop a hook and spend the night. A depth sounder is helpful. The lake shoals in strange places.... like right out in the middle. But if you pay attention it's not a big problem. The purchase of a map is well worth the investment. Most marinas have them. Bill Hatter Proud Mary
