I am kind of shocked that The Aubrey–Maturin series by O'Brian has not made it by the second page. If you are a reader, these books are just spectacular. It is the books that the movie Master and Commander are based on.

I agree-it's a great series and definately worth the read (I am on the first book right now) but as a book for a woman who is new to sailing-maybe not the best pick.

I appreciate it now after years of sailing but I am not sure it would have whetted my appetite for sailing years ago. There is a lot of testosterone in those pages!

Perhaps, I guess it depends on the woman. My wife enjoys the books just for O'Brian's style and the historical accuracy of the period. There is a lot of social aspects to the books that is really up her alley, sometimes too much for my taste. Just marry her already!
