Please send me your suggestions of sailing novels and books (articles and magazines too) about sailing that I can give to my girlfriend. We are in the very early stages of planning a sailing life together. We have never sailed before and it has always been my dream and she says she wants to come along. (And I really do want her to come along.) We bought a sailboat and are doing a total refurbishing. Our plan is to finish the boat by the end of this coming summer, sail Lake Eire for the following summer, and then take the boat to Fort Myers, Florida area (where I have access to a house), then wherever our hearts and the wind take us.

The Rudder Treasury---- Tom Davin
Before the Wind--- David Gowdey (a compilation of stories)
Living a Dream--- Suzanne Giesemann (probably a must read for her. It is written by the assistant to the JCOS at the time of 9-11 and her and her husband's retirement from military life aboard)

So Styx, are you a fan of the greatest band to ever grace the airwaves or is that simply the boats name??

A must Read

I would highly recommend you read Fastnet Force 10, but may not want to share it with your girl friend.

Fan of the band. Have not decided yet but most likely going to be the name of the boat too.

I would recommend "The Motion Of The Ocean" Janna Cawrse Esarey

http://www.amazon.com/Motion-Ocean-...=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1325195728&sr=1-1

Humorous and honest insight into the good, the bad and the ugly pitfalls of a sailing couple? I was sold on this one after reading the first line. It went something like this..

"Somewhere 50 miles of the coast of Oregon I realised the skipper of this boat is an a&#%+¥{. He is also my husband......."

I read all sailing books, Herman Melville, Joshua Slocum, Tania Albi, Hal Roth, Ellen McArther, Jessica Watson and more. Still think this one will win your girlfriend over.

Good luck

Check out "Cruising for Cowards" by Liza and Andy Copeland. It's based on what they learned on a six year circumnavigation (with kids) aboard their 40' Beneteau Bagheera.

It's an easy read about what cruising is really like and addresses the anxieties that a lot of people have about setting sail with real world stories from their own trip.

Styx, one's library would not be complete without several of the books written by the late, imcomparable Welshman--Tristan Jones. One of the great sailors and storytellers in nautical literature. His books are a must for anyone interested in sailing. "Adrift," "Outward Leg," and "Yarns" are but a few of his prodigious writings. Highly recommended. Good luck and good sailing, Ron P.S.
