I'm thinking of sailing my O'Day 22 across the Atlantic this spring. Any suggestions? How much food to bring? How much water? Can I just go east? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

It could take months

Which would require more food than you could provision comfortably. Try circumnavigating Long Island as a test, instead.

Wow and I am afraid to sail my pearson 323 across the Gulf of Mexico!!!! You may want to wait for a gale and then sail a few miles off shore to gain a little experience. If after 10 foot waves and blowing foam you wish to continue, go for it!!! Many people toss their cookies in 6-8 foot seas and 15 knots of wind. Even assuming that you can survive the trip it seems like a very uncomfortable way to travel. Stranger craft have crossed so it is possible. Tom

Be serious, guys

It's been done, though I think ar is a little late in starting his planning. It should not take months. Four to six weeks depending on destination and route. Provision for two months, say sixty days. Water would be the biggest problem in a boat that size. There are standard tables for provisioning. Don't forget that the Pardy's boat was only 24 feet, no engine. They wrote a book about provisioning for the offshore sailor but it's quite useless. Also, you can go in stages -- Bermuda, Azores, mainland Europe. And don't forget the paperwork.

I know of a trip from cali to hawaii in your boat

It could be done with good planning. You would want to have good ballast and maybe a world phone. For food there are army rations (if you can get them...) Sounds like a great adventure! What is the worst weather you have seen? Keep us posted

Atlantic Crossing

Is this for real? I raced across the Atlantic in 2002 on a 72 foot steel-hulled cutter with a crew of 16 trained sailors. I have been sailing most of my life and I wouldn't even think seriously about taking an O'day 22 across. You have to have blue water experience before you venture offshore. Crew with someone on a delivery. I admire your dreams.

The Oday just isn't a great boat

to take offshore. It's a lake and bay boat and probably a great gunk holer. A 20' Pacific Seacraft Flicka would make the trip but it proabaly has more ballast than the total weight of the Oday 22. I talked to a couple who sailed a PS Orion around the world and it's only 27 feet but a very well made and designed 27'. Tom

Are you just...

testing us to see if we're paying attention? If not, um...have a safe trip.

Yes, Let's be Serious

Yes, there are a few instances of very small boats making very long uneventful ocean passages. There are also cases of people surviving falls from 10-story buildings. The odds of mishap/injury/death in either case are much higher. If the gentleman has years of blue water experience, with a good dose of heavy weather experience, then he might consider it. If not, I for one would strongly advise against it.

Yikes

I will be moving my C320 from NY to New Bern this spring and have concerns about sailing the Jersey Coast ..... Never would I imagine crossing the Atlantic ... but then again I want to be around to collect my social security (G). Nevertheless, good luck John s/v Lady K

AR, Do our Homework!

AR, I was about to say go for it until I got the "Do I just go east?" Then I realized that you are either pulling our collective legs or you are a fatal accident waiting to happen. Jon McClain

I'm with you Jon

I've been watching this thread since it came up. I just shake my head. No one has told him that a trip like that in a boat like his takes a lifetime of seamanship knowledge. What's the term for a phony post? P.S. John from Annapolis said it. I missed that.

Atlantic Crossing - Continued...

Say, now that we're on the subject - I have this sailboard and am wondering if I could round Cape Horn. I'd be sure to take beer and a girlfriend. Do I just head south?

This questions is a....

TROLL. However, I'm impressed with the responses so far. My last boat was an Oday 20 and she was very nice. Yet, I firmly believe the deck joint would give after several days in bad weather. Now, I'm assuming that they are constructed in a similar fashion. The risks increase greatly with the size of the boat in open water.

The Race

A few years back, in early October. I did a boat delivery on a 48' Ferrs. We left Newport RI headed for Hells Gate east river hoping to make the current flow the next day. As we left early that morning with winds 10-15 NW as the reports said we assumed we would have a good sail. Later in the day with out warning the winds cropped up to 43Kts seas were building 5-7' at first 8 -10 and I swear we took a couple 15'ers of green water over the bow. The bow keep going down and we wondered if it was even going to come back up again. We took cover in the first lee we could find. I have been lobstering offshore, Master of a 105' whale watching vessel and sailed from Maine to US Virgin I.S. Been in many blows and that day entering the Race at Long Island Sound left an impression of respect of the sea. Just take a look at what happen in Asia. Review the picture of large boats on shore. Look out for the rodge wave. I would,t even dream of sailing my 25.5 Hunter anymore 30 miles out to Mount Desert rock Maine even on a quite day. If you are in for a death wish, I would think again.

East???

Not East, go WEST. You'll be just as successful, and MUCH safer.

FOOD

Please learn how to fish from a sailboat. Min. 3 nylon lines, shockcord ,with SS. leader and good hooks. Small Tuna in the a m makes a great lunch. Try to catch rain water.Use some saltwater for cooking pasta etc. Good luck Walter
