Sounds like...

Sounds like grounds for a new business product! Had forgotten about half of these songs, but after reading the postings, it's a 'must have' them all situation...must be something about sails and songs and souls!!! Jule & Carl

Bob McGee, O'Day 22

A Mariner's song, not necessarily a sailor's...

"Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" by Gordon Lightfoot ... all you Great Lakes sailors should know this one. Bob McGee

If you want to go classical...

DeBussy's "La Mer" (The Sea)...hardly classical, but still not "pop"--Gilbert & Sullivan's "HMS Pinafore" has some fun nautical songs... It has nothing to do with sailing, the sea or even water...but if you can put your hands on Leontine Price's version of "Un Bel Di" from Madame Butterfly, and play it while you watch the sun rise from the cockpit in a anchorage by yourself, she'll raise the hair on the back of your neck and bring tears to your eyes from the sheer beauty of it. Not classical, but Glenn Yarborough made 4 or 5 albums in the mid-late '60s and early 70s that have songs on them that are just wonderfully romantic listening at night on an anchor. "Come Share My LIfe" is one album..."The Lonely Things" is another...just do a search for him and listen to everythng (before Napster is gone and it's too late!).

Beethoven, Smetana and Lovett.

1. On a big blustery day, a big blustery Beethoven can't be beat. 2. A music appreciation flash back - great for big rolling waves: "The Moldau" by Smetana. 3. How about "If I had a Boat" by Lyle Lovett? Has anyone really ridden a pony on a boat? Are we having fun yet? Colonel John, thanks for the great post. rb

Need a Napster!

Geez, all these memories. You'll need a really big changer. How big do they come and still fit on a boat? Then put 'em on the web so we can all download them! Then there's the one Garth Brooks did in the movie, the one about a lighthouse.

Big Waves and Wagner!

For some great sailing music to accompany a stiff breeze a plunging bow, and flying spray, try the overtures to "The Flying Dutchman" and "The Valkeries" by Wagner. This is very dramatic music that is highly evokative of the sea. Enjoy!

Jim Cook

"Jesse Cook" anything

In the "New Wave section" (don't let that scare you) you can find several CDs by Jesse Cook (no relation). He performs a style called "New Flaminco" which is sort of a classical guitar with latin beat. It is my preferred listening while sailing (specially into the sunset). Try it, you'll like it. Richard Gottlieb

Add David Wilcox

I recommend "New World/Big Horizon" from his "Big Horizon" CD

Tony Zambella

It's only rock & roll

Try a few 50's rock & roll tunes for those days when your working on he boat in port. Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Fats Domimoe etc... Sometimes you just got to make a little noise.

R

Rob Rich

Although I don't like his new stuff... Sting

has a great old album called "The Soul Cages" which has beautiful nautical imagery and themes in each song. It was written after his father died, and is accordingly full of themes of life as a voyage, storms, etc... Great Stuff. Rob

Chip

Southern Cross, Crosby, Stills, Nash

Southern Cross is one of the best sailin songs.

B

Bob Metz

how can we all forget?

How about some of the theme music from "Victory At Sea"? I can always picture the waves when I hear it, especially when it gets rough.

Bradley Cavedo

Wagner without words

There is a CD called Wagner Without Words, a collection of all of the best music from the Ring Cycle. Not great around a group, but I sail alone occasionally, and this is some of the best dramatic music you will ever hear, good for under way or at anchor. Makes you feel like you are living a part in some adventure movie.

Gilligan's Island Theme

Don't forget the theme from Gilligan's Island.....'...for a 3 hour tour...' - our adult kids always seem to start humming that song when we take them out! Of course, they only saw the re-runs, while we were in for the originals...;>) Jule & Carl H340 s/v Syzygy

The Living Sea

The soundtrack from the IMAX movie "The Living Sea" by STING is an incredible selection of songs. Great to listen to in the morning while at anchor. It is our favorite time to enjoy good music and mother nature.

John G. New

A few more......

How about: "Queen and Country" by Jethro Tull (from the War Child album)? And "Barometer Soup" is a Jimmy Buffett CD with some great sailing music and includes a cover of James Taylor's "Mexico" (mentioned previously) John
