Colonel John W. "D-Day" Day

Ladies and Gentlemen I'm in the process of "burning" a CD with nothing but sailing and related songs on her. Looking for ideas of what to put on this CD. I'm a rock and roll fan but will entertain any ideas you have. Currently, I have Come Sail Away by Styx, Sail on Sailor by The Beach Boys, Closer to Home by Grand Funk, Sailing by Christopher Cross, Sail On by The Commodores, Madman Across the Water by Elton John, and Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd (I always get nostalgic when I'm sailing). Open for your suggestions to fill up the rest of the CD. Thanks in advance. D-Day Hunter 380, Fox III

MUSIC

How about "Windy" I think by "The Association" or "Sittin' On the Dock Of The Bay" Otis Redding? Great idea. Sounds like something for the upcoming weekend.

REAL nostalgia:

Any good recordings of old sea chanteys like Shanandoah, Haul Away Joe, Drunken Sailor...gosh, some of 'em even pre-date Pete Seeger (by about 100 years). :) The Kingston Trio was a bit later...Sloop John B (they did it first--and better), Kingston Town...quite a few with an "island flavor." Anything by Harry Belafonte. And of course, no collection would be complete without "26 miles across the sea...Santa Catalina is waitin' for me.." :) But Beach Boys? They did surfer songs, not sailing songs! Otoh, two of Buffet's later albums-- Banana Wind and Fruitcakes--have wonderful sailing music on 'em. Not necessarily "sea songs," but great for sailing anyway, so I guess Beach Boys are ok. If you like classical music, try Wagner's "Flying Dutchman"...during the storm movement, you can almost feel the tossing deck!

Enya and Mark Knopfler

In addition to many already posted, I've been sailing "with" Enya for years and just discovered Mark Knopfler's (of Dire Straits fame) great new CD (Sailing to Philadelphia). Check it out!

An old folky

You might try to find some Gordon Bok stuff. He is a Mainiac (from maine). "Old Fat Boat," is outstanding, "I love her and she must love me, but I think it's only for my money." Stan Rodgers did plenty with a Nova Scotia theme and an album of Great Lakes stuff including "White Squall." Finally, Eric Wolfgang Korngold. A modern recording of his music for the Errol Flynn swashbuckler, "The Sea Hawk," is available on CD.

Don't forget...

...Day-O (The banana boat song) by Harry Belafonte. Or Sloop John B by the Beach Boys. BTW, I'm doing the same thing.

Michael Rowed the Boat Ashore and for the kids...Row,Row,Row, your boat. Sounds like fun!

different sailing music

A couple of interesting additions for those who don't mind some classical stuff occasionally. Who can forget Hanel's "Water Music?" Okay, written for floating on barges down the Thames, but still pleasant on any water. My wife found this quite by chance but we love it for relaxing, on the water or off: Pachelbel's Canon in D with the sounds of (I can't tell exactly which) the surf or a boat sailing gently along. The title is "Pachelbel, Forever by the Sea" on Don Gibson's Solitudes, exploring nature with music.

COOL CHANGE

Cool Change by The Little River Band has always been my #1 favorite. In fact I love the whole CD. Sean

BOB MARLEY

Jeepers,is it just me, but how can you own a sailboat and not have Bob Marley on board? Seems like a crime. Also, the Putumayo World Music lable has an entire collection of great compilation CD's with titles like : Islands, Cuba, Reggae Around The World, Brasileiro, etc. This world music just can't be beat for both on the water and apres sailing. Lastly, no boat can do without at least one John Coltrane CD. May I suggest John Coltrane Ballads or The Lighter Side of John Coltrane as good entry points for those who maight not be "into" jazz? There's just no way a starlit night, moon reflecting off the water, and a glass of red wine can't be enhanced my his sax.

Red Sails

Bobby Bland did a terrific "Red Sails in the Sunset" a number of years ago. Also Christopher Cross had a big hit with " Sailing " . Another good tune with a wetter side would be Roy Orbison's " Wind Surfer " .

Chitlins' con Queso

By Stevie Ray Vaughn, a wonderful instrumental that will get your blood pumping. Most people are a little surprised when in heavy weather conditions, during races, I sail by with this song absolutly cranking on the stereo. Regards. Bruce. Neon Moon
