What about Dead Calm

I also liked the movie Wind - If you look carefully I think you will recognize the boats. Master and commander had great sailing scenes but I was dissapointed with the character development - I never really bought into the relationship between the main charaters. The discussionof nelson touched every Englishmans heart - I have been through HMS Victory, his flagship, proably more athn 10 times - If you ever visit the south of England stop by Portsmouth and take the tour - the serving sailors who walk you through do a super job and make the whole thing come alive. Anyway no one has mentioed "Dead Calm" an 1989 movie staring a young Nicole Kidman. The sailing scenes on the open seas where great and the boats where fabulous.Finally what about "Message in a Bottle" beautiful images of wodden boats under sail.

For fans of Nelson's navy

try: "Damn the Defiant", and one of Peter Ustinov's less well known masterpieces, the classic "Billy Budd". I noticed no one has mentioned Gregory Peck's star turn in "Captain Horatio Hornblower" either. Also, while its not a movie in the same sense as the others mentioned, anyone interested in the reality of life on a windjammer should get a hold of Irving Johnson's "Around Cape Horn". Unbelievable footage of his voyage on one of the last cargo-carrying windjammers.

Not exactly a sailing movie, but its fun to watch the first "Jaws" movie and then take the kids out on the lake.

OK, one for the girls. 50 first dates. Its cute and romantic, but there is some sailing too! I do like scary movies. I think I’ll get “Visitors” for the next time we are on the boat.

With Bill Murray and Richard Dreyfuss.Has Bill Murray strapped to the mast yelling out "Look at me! I'm sailing!"Ok, maybe not the best, but sure love Bill Murray.

it was filmed at Smith Mountain Lake in central Virginia. If you stop by the Irish Pub at King's Point Marina you'll see the tender personal message Bill Murray penned for proprietor Gloria on a napkin. But for some neat sailing scenes, try the obscure but highly acclaimed "Knife in the Water," Roman Polanski's first feature length film, directed when he was 21. No budget for retakes (it was filmed in Poland), so see if you can spot the error when the skipper rigs the boat. Great shots on the water, and some psychological suspense too, with a neat twist at the end.

Isn't it cool that people make movies...

about something we all love to do? However, no movie will ever capture the thrill of actually being there, but it's nice that they try!BTW, 1 vote for 'Captain Ron'!

Message in a Bottle

I'm sorry to be a pill, but "what about bob?" is NOT a sailing movie just because it has a sailing scene or two in it.The following movies all had more sailing than bill murray's great film:Tom Hanks' "joe and the volcano" where meg ryan's a gorgeous schooner captain. Ashley Judd's "double jeopardy" (just a bitchen' boat)Pierce Brosnan's "The Thomas Crown Affair" remember the cool supercat scenes?NOW....what really qualifies? how about Kevin Costner's "message in a bottle"? Is there truly a movie that embraces a man's love for building and sailing fine wooden boats more than this one?

Thinking about sailing movies what do you think about Kevin Coster's Waterworld?I was intruiged by all the gismo's on the boat - and the idea of a "life" on the water searching for "drinking water"

Pirates of The Caribbean!Thanks to Marc as well for reminding me about "Boatnicks"...hadn't thought of that movie in years--still chuckle when I think of the scene where the girl has her towel stuck in the steering wheel, and the entire cutter crew jumps overboard to help... ;-)

A few years ago there was an excellent TV movie called _Longitude_ which was the story of John Harrison and his development of seagoing chronometers.In addition to the sailing scenes involving the sea trials and the first ocean-crossing test of Harrison's invention, the topic of navigation is most relevant to us sailors.

WOW, more than I remembered

You guys all remebered some great ones I had fogotten, including "Capt. Ron" whom some people I work with intimate I resemble. There was a great series on Hornblower as a young officer on TV also, I think it was PBS then run on A&E later.Off course but speaking of beautiful boats they just delivered a new fully tricked out Cabo Rico 56 accented with Hunter Green to someone in my marina and they had it docked for the weekend at the end of my row. Had to walk past it everyday for 3 days, now it is down the main channel next to another so I have to pass it everytime I go in or out.It breaks my heart to see beautiful boats that always seem to be sitting at the dock.
