Mentoring

Before we launched our first boat this past spring, I found a couple of experienced sailors that helped us immensely. I still keep in touch and have become friends with them. Its always a learning experience just to have a casual sailing conversation, they share their experience freeely. When they need a helping hand, I try to jump in. By helping, I learn. We're now in a marina where almost everyone helps each other. Instead of one or two mentors, I can ask questions of a lot of people willing to share their experience, pitch in a helping hand or give direction. Help is given freely and no pay forward or pay back is expected. That is a contageous attitude. When I see a fellow sailor trying to figure out something I've learned, I try to share the knowledge. Seeing other boats, helping work on other boats and sailing with others broadens my understanding of sailing. IMHO, this helps me be a better sailor. It makes my sailing experience more fulfilling.

one more on mentoring

I belong to a university sailing club (although I have not been a student for 20+ years). Members teach members on the club boats at "Saturday Boat School". This is a great system, not only does it give exposure to lots of mentors, but once you learn basic skills you can then go out and teach others. By teaching, I find that I continue to learn.

MY MENTORS

Several of my social friends are avid sailors. When my wife and I decide to switch to sail, they all offered their expertise - from the purchase of the boat to the last sail in October. I am never at a loss for assistance. This small group has expanded to include many new friends and mentors. The "payment" from them is usually a thanks for a day on the water and a drink(s) at anchor that night. I
