I love sailing and I love reading all the various sailing magazines. Even though I'm a Coastal/Lake/Trailer Sailor, I enjoy buying and reading SAIL, Latts & Atts, Cruising World & Good Old Boat, even if they have little to do with by type of sailing. Question - I buy and read each of these every month and when done, I hate throwing most of them away or recyclinig them for the paper. I keep all my Good Old Boat mags and sometimes the others if they have good "DIY" hints/articles, but would anyone have any good ideas of better use for previously read sailing magazines? I live/work in Houston & Kennebunkport and would like to find a better final resting place than the recycler's bin? Kev

Old articles

cut out the useful articles and then get rid of the rest of the book/magazine. Otherwise you'll be inundated with paper. Tom

Old Magazines

I just got rid of about ten years of Practical Sailer magazines by offering them to anyone who would like them on the HOW forum. They paid the shipping and were glad to get them. I had some requests from Sea Scout and other sail teaching organizations. Post an offer and see what you get!

used book store

My local library has a used book store. I donate all my old books and magazines to them. The proceeds support the library and programs.

Local Library

sells used magazines for just pennies. They say that they sometimeds sell the same magazine two or three times. The profits go to buy more books for the library.

schools

Grade schools, Jr. high schools, boatbuilding communities in your area (we have CABBS here in Cleveland), Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts...don't stop me, I'm on a roll....any kids you see lurking around your boat playing sailor, stand in front of Wal-mart and ask anyone with kids under ten if they would like them (FREE)...take em to a bait store and tell the counter guy to give them to a good home...one at a time...tell him it will bring in more business...list em on Craigs list in the free section...in the boat section as FREE....

I take my old mags, are there's plenty of them

and put them in the laundry space in the marina head buildings. Someone snatches them up.

spread the wealth

Take them to your barber, dentist, doctors office and leave them in the waiting room. How about at car service centers etc. You get the picture. Who knows, someone might get interested in sailing.

Scan the Tech articles

You guys have posted a lot of good ideas for what to do with the magazines, but I wouldn't tear out the tech articles, they will probably get lost or messed up(that's been my experience). Try scanning the articles that you want to save and keep them on your hard drive where you can easily find them using your computers search function. You may also want to back them up on a CD-R/RW or DVD R/RW. I also do the same thing with good tech topics and articles I find on this and other sailing sites.
