I subscribe to Cruising World but find it is very little benefit for those of us with small and midsize sailboats. Anyone recommend a sailing mag that has useful information and stories on smaller sailboats?

Another great mag is "DIY Boat Owner". Great articles on boat maintenance and repair. Comes out 4 times per year. Loaded with info. Scott

Small Craft Advisor

It's in the mold of Good Old Boat, which I also enjoy. Published out of Pacific Northwest. I also read Sail & it's companion quarterly, BoatWorks. The latter is specifically geared to the DIY boater. I find Sail has a wide variety of topics & normally read it cover-to-cover. I found Cruising World fairly useless & let it lapse after a year. Ditto with Sailing World after 3 complimentary issues. As a BoatUS member with the trailering coverage too, I get those bi-monthly magazines & find them interesting, when I get to them, but they are near the bottom of the pile. For what it's worth, I also get Northeast Boating, formerly Offshore. That's more about ideas for destinations/vacations & interesting stories about boating in the Northeast. It has a companion magazine for the Chesapeake. It includes a fair amount of coverage on powerboating & fishing, neither of which interest me, so I skip those articles. As you can tell from my list, I already have enough to read! I did Practical Sailor for a while, but the subscription price is pretty steep, IMO.

Is SAIL the staple?

No one mentioned it, assume that we all subscribe and are looking for others.

I second GOB

Good Old Boat is a must-have. I hate those mags that assume everyone owns a shiny yacht they race all day. GOB comes out every two months, and is always full of good stories, new ideas and useful information.

on-line treasure

Free as the breeze and the best rag money can't but for the SE sailor(link below). Otherwise it's Sail mag. Like others I've found CW too unrealistic for my modest ($$$$) abilities, Prac Sailor a little too pricey and Sailing world too much toward high strung racing. What about Latts and Atts from the left coast? GOB maybe too....hmmm Santa is coming;). Try reading the Southwinds on-line edition and subscribe if you're too far north for the free editions available at most SE nautical retailers. http://www.southwindssailing.com/index.html

Heavens to Mergatroid!

I mentioned Sail! :) I also want to reiterate my endorsement of Small Craft Advisor. Nice people, great articles, aimed as we who can't afford 6+ figure "yachts." It's a bi-monthly & it even has the endorsement of GOB. Link below. I think if you ask, they'll send you a complimentary perusal issue. Tell Josh that Kevin from Brownsville, Vermont sent you!

dollars

these days I have to choose my mags carefully as they are getting prohibitively expensive. My list includes Wooden Boat ( love them but wouldn't own one). Pacific Yachting and numerous woodworking mags. My normally patient wife seems to think that they are taking over the house. Maybe I need to buy a bigger one, but I would have to stop buying my magazines. BTW SCA is $12.00 more in Canada. Why???

Yeah, I subscribe to the usuals,

Have no interest in ever sailing to the South Pacific but you got to take the good with bad.
