DIY?

DIY==Do It Yourself??? I like Good Old Boat, lots of great info in there, as well as reviews of older boats. I am still waiting for my first subscription of Boat Works to come in, but that shouldn't be much longer I hope, between working on restoring the Northern, reading how to restore it with the aid of Don Casey, et. el. I find myself rereading a lot of the articles in every sailing magainze I get my paws on....though I have to say SAIL is a pretty good mag, with many Blue Water stories, but a lot of wasted space on racing.

Let's not forget

Let's not forget that these magazines are interested in making money. They publish content that brings in the greatest combination of advertising and subscription/newsstand revenue. It seems the majority of users of this website are owners of older, smaller boats, which does not seem to be the target audience of the Cruising World and Sail magazines. Not surprising then that many of us don't care for them. I bet that the magazine publishers are in the same position that boat builders are: they make a lot more money catering to the high end of the market than they do servicing the higher volume, lower-priced segment. That would also explain why some of the magazines that catered strictly to us low rent types have come and gone. Anyone remember "Coastal Cruising" magazine? They billed themselves as the "magazine of affordable dreams" and featured articles on ports and places acessesable to the more populated areas of the US, and on older boats. Very nicely done, but I don't think they lasted more than a couple of years. Kudos to Good Old Boat, which is the first magazine I remember that caters to us cheapos that has made it.

You should write promo for tv shows. You mentionned inexpensive bedding system, excellent and inexpensive winch handles that float.Please tell me, what are they?

Lattitudes and Attitudes is good reading

Lattitudes and Attitudes is a pretty great magazine in my opinion. It makes you wish you were "out there" from the great articles written by people cruising the world. Thier TV show - can't remember the channel, but it's on Dish Network - is really good at inspiring you to get out there.Their web site is searfaring.com - good stuff!

Latitude 38

Can't believe no one has mentioned the mag yet. Has great stories from people out there living the life, covers west coast racing scene pretty well, great letters section, really nice people running the thing, oh yea, and it's free.When Mary and I went to the Bahamas for a couple of weeks earlier this year they even sent a box full of the magazines for me to take along. Passed a copy out to each boat I saw with a Calif. hailing port. Seems they were all happy as I recieved plenty of free drinks at the bars.dave....

And try 'Lectronic Latitude

which is Latitude 38's daily e-zine update, They place breaking sailing news and other stuff.Dave C has said it right. Lat38 is certianly teh best regional sailing mag, and among the tops overall.
