I just got back from a week in the Poconos, which included a visit with an old friend in Warren, NJ. Both he and his 12 year old son are interested in learning how to sail. On the drive down from Pennsylvania, I passed a good sized sailboat store along NJ Route 31 in the hills (of all places!) north of Washington, NJ. That leads me to believe that there's a decent lake nearby. To all you sailors on Lake Hopatcong, is there a lake and/or somewhere that offers sailing lessons close to Clinton, NJ? Thanks in advance. Round Valley Reservoir

Peter, the Sailboat Shop on 31 is actually South of Washingon in the town of Glen Gardner. It's a nice little boat store and Steve, the owner is "good people". Round Valley Reservoir is approx 2 miles South on 31 from the Sailboat Shop. I don't know of any schools though. I'm sure if he showed up with a day sailor or equivelant, someone there could show him the ropes. If he buys a boat from Steve, Steve might be willing to take him out for a lesson or two. Come to think of it, tell him to come down to Tom's River NJ and buy my 33 and I'll give 2 or 3 lessons as part of the deal!! Don Bodemann

It's Spruce Run Reservoir

There are 2 Reservoirs in Hunterdon County - the one closest to the Sailboat Shop is Spruce Run. Round Valley is off Rt 22 south of Clinton. They are both great places for small daysailors. I used to sail both when I lived in NJ. There is also a new reservoir in Warren County. The folks at the Sailboat Shop should be able to help your friends find someone to show them the basics. When they get tired of lake sailing, have them head to the Jersey shore - steadier breezes and more opportunities for advanced lessons.

Sailing Lessons

I sail on Lake Hopatcong and I do not know of any active sailing school presently on the lake. I know at Greenwood Lake which borders NY State, South Shore Marina, a Catalina dealer has sailing lessons. You may try SEAS, an organization that teaches sailing on sunfish on Budd Lake, NJ. Both Newport Sailing School and Offshore Sailing School (Steve Colgate's) are located in Jersey City on the Hudson River. Other than that, NJ Sailing School in Point Pleasant is highly rated but that is "Down the Shore" Good Luck

Sailing Lessons

I live 20 miles north of Clinton NJ and have taken many sailing lessons at the NJ Sailing School in Point Pleasant. Those who have also sailed with them know why they have won so many awards. I highly recommend them even if it is a bit of a drive to the shore. Their web site is www.njplaza.com/sail/
