I would like to take my father sailing next year leaving Rochester and heading North along the eastern r566shore to Canada. Have any of you sailed this route? Any stops that we should not miss? How about marinas to check out. We will be sleeping on my Mac 25. Thanks, Jerry

never done the canadian side but

Jerry, I have never done the canadian side but I have done the US side from Rochester to the 1000 Islands. Irondequoix(sp?) bay is nice but further east is Sodus Bay and that can be alot of fun or a hasle depending on your outlook. Its busy alot of the time and there are a lot of places to go to eat and have some cocktails. Next is Little Sodus Bay (Fair Haven) nice bay with a few places to eat and dock. Then is Oswego, several places to go to eat/drink. Also alot of areas to dock, including tying to the wall, which I believe is free. Mexico Bay is next, which is mainly the eastern shore of LO and not too much there available to sailboats because its shallow in the harbours. Then you hit Cape Vincent and the 1000 Islands (Navy Point is before CV but not buy much). If you stop at Navy Point there is a nice marina buy the same name and a few places to eat with a short walk. Dont worry though it really is only a short walk. The whole trip was great when I did it, most places seemed pretty reasonable for dockage and shorepower etc.. 1000 Islands has a ton of places to stay and go visit so definatly get yourself a book on crusing there. Also Sodus Bay was busy and didnt have space left when I arrived, so I begged a restuarnt on the eastern shore to let me stay and plug into a wall socket for juice, point being plan ahead. The included link is for crusing canada in general but they have a decent section concerning LO sailing, both the north shore and 1000 islands Have fun, hope this helped some Brad

Ports

Jerry, access to local knowledge is a great thing, but having "the book" in your hand is its own reward! The book is: "Ports: Cruising guide to Lake Ontario". It will be a wonderful winter read and cruise planning guide. You can get it on-line at: http://www.nauticalmind.com/customer/PORTS-Cruising-Guide-to-Lake-Ontario-pr-70948.html Herre is a site you might also find interesting: http://home.ca.inter.net/~gkmd/sail/index.htm There are others you could find with an internet search. Having just returned last week from 5 weeks in the 30,000 Islands and the North Channel of Georgian Bay, I look forward to returning to Quinte and the Thousand Islands next year.

Lots of good info from BIGUMs

I agree with most said in the last post. We live in Rochester and have sailed all around Lake Ontario for the past 10+ years. I also have a website listed below that may interest you. First off, buy a copy of The Cruising Guides PORTS for Lake Ontario & the Thousand Islands. It sells for about $40 at The West Marine stores in Rochester. This book has all the info you need plus much more. It is the best investment you can make for cruising Lake Ontario. A couple comments on the other post: Navy Point is a sailboat broker and marina located in Sackets Harbor. We were there a week ago and love it. The marina is so popular now that they request a reservation before you get there. You also have Henderson Harbor near Sackets with a good marina. I would stay away from Mexico Bay if the wind is from the west. The waves pile up there and I have heard it can be difficult sailing out of. I haven't been there, so I could be wrong on that and make get some flack from other sailors on the east shore. Look me up in Rochester if you want to chat. I sail Water Colors, a Hunter 33.5 docked at Shumway Marine, dock C-9.
