I looked up the area on the map, and it looks like a great place to sail. It looks somewhat like the area we are in at the east end of Ontario. I see it is close to Cleveland. Is there alot of boat traffic?
Papham, I too sail out of Sandusky and have for the last 20 years. It is a great place to cruise from. Your Catalina 22 is fine for the short cruises in the Western Basin of Lake Erie. Great Destinations from Sandusky starting point- Put-In-Bay- 3-4 hours, Kelleys Island 1-2-1/2 hours, Pelee Island- 4-5 hours, Cedar Island Ontario or Leamington Ontario 5-6 hours. Port Clinton- 3hours, Huron- 2 hours and numerous other destinations. Ship traffic is pretty non-existent on most of these trips with the exception of cruises to Leamington or Cedar Island which cross the Pelee Passage. Small boat traffic is another matter on weekends but not even a consideration during the week. Cruising with good planning and careful attention will give you no problems on the C-22. That being said, fast moving storms do pop up so pay careful attention to the weather. You can always drop the hook in the lee of one of the isalnds if you encounter a storm. There are at least 3 public launch ramps in Sandusky. The most commonly used one is on Water Street next to the water treatment plant.
BTW- Cleveland is at least 50 miles away and not an issue at all. Sandusky is a great strating out point for the trailer sailor.
