Sailing Kayak

Hey Everyone,

Good morning! I wanted to start off today by asking if anyone has ever sailed a kayak; was it a tri-toon or monohull? How did it handle? Was it fast? I've got a friend who has one of these:

It's one of the fastest vessels I've ever sailed that doesn't have a hydrofoil. He's off in college now at A&M, and it hasn't hit the water since I sailed it last year. What're your thoughts?

God Bless,
S.S.

My cousin bought one of these Tandem Mirage Hobbie kayaks. We tested it out on Lake Union, Seattle WA.
Not much wind. The pedal power had us going at quite a clip. Lot easier than paddling.
Sail rolls around the mast.. If you did not have the Amas you would flip over. It was a kick on his backyard lake.
Runs right up on the beach. It is a wet ride. A summer joy.

Of course. In Summer Rental John Candy used his bloomers to get that last bit of sail aloft.

Yes, for years I sailed an expedition kayak and participated in a few competitions. Frame and skin sea kayak. Here you can see it rigged as schooner in Core Sound,NC, reefed down preparing to gybe. Very seaworthy.

I've only heard whispers about these things. Although, I've had Allowishishishis's experience. Also on skis, open up my ski jacket and get blown across Echo Lake at the foot of Canon Mountain.

I had a Hobie mirage drive tandem inflatable with a sail kit that was ok with one person on a reach. Would not go to weather very well. With two people it was not good at all-better to paddle. I will say the Mirage drive worked great.

@hewebb I thought the drive was pretty cool. You move through the water the same way a penguin does.

I have a Hobie TI now and have owned either an AI or TI since 2010. Because you can easily roll the sail up (furl), this boat has no boom which somewhat hurts the performance as a sailboat. If you dont pedal and just sail the boat, in lighter winds I think its in the ballpark with maybe a sunfish - not at all bad but also not that great. But.. if you add in the mirage drive pedaling (which works great), now you can beat a lot of sailboats especially in very light wind. Maybe that is cheating.. but I own that boat because it has the mirage drives and it would be silly to pay for the drives (adds about a grand to the price) and not use them plus great exercise so I always do.

As the wind picks up, those boats will exceed "conventional hull speed" for their length. Pretty easy to spend a lot of time in the 6 knot range and my peak speed on a deep downwind run in a fair amount of wind has been around 10.5 knots. The Hobie TI when sailed from the back seat is just the master at downwind in windy conditions. When its windy, there is nothing else I would rather be in over the Hobie TI.

As just a sailboat, the Hobies are not that impressive but where they really excel is wind range. No wind they are fun to pedal. With the stability of the tri and the infinitely and very easy to reef sail, they have a huge easy to use wind range. Its really a fun boat on a day with a lot of wind even in conditions where the sailboat is more survival mode than fun. They are about "water hikes" and going somewhere rather than just sailing. Its a very versatile boat which ends up hurting its identy. Some people only sail them, some people get them for fishing. I use it for water hikes and almost always have some destination in mind.

These dont come with a method to mount an outboard but lots of people do (I did). I use a 2.5 hp Susuki four stroke which gets the TI up to near 7 knots a full throttle with just myself in the boat.

Here is a somewhat poorly edited video of how I use that boat. I used the 2.5 hp outboard to motor way up the Colorado river (ie the ski lift idea) then did a many mile sail back.

The video below was from one of the most fun sailing days Ive had and it includes a collision between two Hobies (yep.. Im the clown who hit the other guy). This was NOT about right of way so no need to comment on that. It was about two people sailing like teenagers who just stole a couple cars and were doing some real dumb stuff..

Dear god those should be the commercial for Hobie! If that isn't a true definition of fun on the water then I don't know what is!

Walt, thanks for the videos. I was hoping that you'd join into the conversation. The wife and I are still considering a TI. For now we're still getting settled into our new home here in Lake Country.

There was a thread here recently about reverse bows (wave piercing). In 2015, Hobie changed the TI hull shape and added some volume forward and part of this was through the reverse bow. I have the newer 2015 model with the reverse bow and based on a fairly small sample size have come to the conclusion that the 2014 and older style TI hull with the more conventional bow is actually faster in light wind. I have heard another say the same thing. We do a fair amount of sailing with two newer TIs (2015 and 2016) and an older 2014 TI and the 2014 TI is hard to keep up with.

The big benifit in the newer TI design is the seat. The older seat worked fine but you are always sitting a puddle of water. As mentioned, these are somewhat of a wet ride regardless and people modify things to improve the seat on the older model. The new seat on the 2015 and newer boats is nice however.

Point being.. if you come accross an older 2014 or earlier TI, you can get a significantly better deal and my impression is that the older hull is a little faster. The seat is what you have to decide about - worth the cost or not. Nothing at all wrong with the older TI's. Recently Hobie changed the mirage drive and put a reversing mechanism in place where you can pull a lever and get reverse drive. You can do the same thing with the old mirage drive by pulling it out and installing it backwards. The reverse doesnt really solve any problem for me so Im somewhat happy to have the older simpler drives.

You get used to how well fiberglass sailboats handle UV and the plastic kayaks are a huge amount worse.. You have to keep these in a garage and also need a trailer.. too big to car top although possible. We car topped a TI from Denver to Friday Harbor in the San Juan islands a couple years ago but I had to make a custom cradle for the car.

If I could only have either the Hobie TI or a sailboat.. it would be a really tough decision. Fortanately one I dont have to make and I really like having both and switching back and forth.

First picture is a 2014 TI with the more conventional bow. I more often than not am seeing this boat from behind. Second picture is a newer 2016 TI with the reverse bow (and better seats).

Okay... I know it’s old but back in the 1970’s. This is how we traveled the Sea of Cortez.... fast, light and efficient. Sailing wa so much simpler then.
