Re: mission bay to catalina

Thanks again Joe
thanks for the info, I'm guessing you're right about catalina being an ambitious first trip
I do have an auto-tiller but my motor is less than reliable, I was planning on buying another one before the trip
he likes to leave around 2am and motor til the wind picks up, says he get's there before sundown
since his boat is slipped at seaworld I don't think he wants to pack it all up and trailer it to long beach, and I wouldn't want to go by myself first time... or anytime on the c22 :D

I like that glorietta bay, have been there on our old power boat, I didn't realize they had free anchorage... that may be the way to go, or la playa that you mentioned
San Diego Bay is big and the sailing is more wide open
I'm just getting a little claustrophobic in Mission Bay already... it's great for learning the stuff, but how many time can you actually sail back and forth in sail bay or to the channel and back
I guess I'll put in some more time before making a big mistake though
thanks man

Steve, learning how to use the boom vang and the traveler to control angle of attack and sail shape will make you a much better upwind sailor.

If you have a friend with a sistership, why not go out with him for some practical instruction?

Steve, Welcome from another C22 Sailor. Sounds like you've got it bad...that's a good thing. For tips on sail trim, consider Don Guillette's sail-trim book. He has an expert forum here, and you can order his notebook and a couple quick reference cards here on SailboatOwners. I've been sailing and racing my C22 for several years and I consistently get clobbered by the really good racers, but I learn something new every time I go out. It's a life-long education. That's one of the things that makes it so much fun.:D

Don't stop! Keep going.. Take your boat out in the ocean next time... you won't feel claustrophobic there...you'll love it! if you go south... get outside the kelp beds... a heading of around 220 will give you a nice starboard reach.. and a pleasant cruise down the Pt Loma coastline. If you want to go north... get at least a half mile off the jetty on starboard, then tack north towards La Jolla. You can work on your sail trim... or just enjoy the scenery.
