An example of controlling the boat with an anchor, or other means for docking: In this case we had the engine. But the wind (Harbor Blast) was blowing up the fairway. So the skipper would have to turn the bow across the wind to back into the slip (You had to back in to be able to deboard and board the boat). I was on the bow and as he made the turn I was close to the outer poles of slips on the other side of the fairway. So I slipped a line around a pole and held the bitter end. I could prevent the bow from blowing down before the boat had rearward way. Once the boat was moving backward I could play the line out at the same speed the boat was going back. And so we backed in uneventfully. There should have been applause but post race dock parties were going on and I doubt anyone noticed. However you can control the boat while docking is a good thing.
