Sailing? in the Finger Lakes

Hello members,

We just returned from a trip to New York's beautiful Finger Lakes region. We camped, hiked, used our kayak, attended wine tasting activities, enjoyed delicious meals at a variety of restaurants, and looked for sailboats for sale. Many surprises for a person who had not been there. (1) Wine is king, but hard cider is on the rise. (2) New York's State Park system is very "user friendly". (3) Marinas are mostly populated with power boats. (That's only a bad thing if you are hoping to "kick" a few sailboat hulls.) (4) Canandaigua Lake Yacht Club is hosting the 50th Anniversary Pearson Ensign Regata today. (We saw beautiful boats on trailers arriving yesterday.) (5) Canandaigua, NY is a "happenin place" on weekends with lots to do and see. (6) Rick German of German Brothers Marina on Canandaigua Lake was very helpful in showing us sailboats he had stored there for sale.

Our search was for either a Celebrity Class or a Flying Scot. The trip did not turn up either of those types of boat.:cry: If any of you could help me in the search I would be grateful. I would surely consider a boat in need of repair. We are in PA, but would travel a reasonable distance to see boats.

What about the Mariner? Are you adding to your fleet? Friend just bought a brand new Thistle, fast and fun. Then the other end of the Douglas boats, my Highlander. Lots of those available including mine. Well maybe. Love those NY lakes.

Hi Ed,

The Mariner is a friend's boat we store at our home. In return, we "spruced it up" and used it a few times. We like the look of the boat, but we are not comfortable on the short cockpit seats. He is going to list it for sale soon. RE: the Highlander.....We traveled to NJ to see a Highlander and found it to have a larger mast than we thought we could raise regularly by ourselves. Do you use any sort of pole to assist in setting the mast?

Hi Phil, no, I never built any kind of gin pole. I walk the mast up in the boat while having one or two guys on ropes tied to the halyards. The problem is stabilizing that much leverage, it wants to go sideways. The guys on the ropes are out at about 30 degrees and both stabilize and help lift once I get about half-way. Then they hold firm while I attach the forestay. About two-thirds of the way there is enough support from the shrouds. Two can do it, one in the boat and one pulling. But the guy on the ground has to help with any attempt to lose it sideways. I don't travel so only do this once or twice a season. Lucky to have a dock.

I sail in the Adirondacks, live near Lake Ontario, spend not nearly enough time in the Finger Lakes. Much to the surprise of many, New York has a lot to offer! (except for the high taxes)

Seneca Lake is where I went back in 2000. Dang it was beautiful up there. In fact, Upstate New York would surprise any Southerner with its beauty. We all grow up under the assumption that New York is just one huge city. This Southern Boy has learned better.

Have you tried using jaxed mash website? It filters all the craigslist locations by state for the specific search you're after.

Phil, an FS option

First off I agree on the beauty and diversity of activities of the Finger Lakes region. We make the trip over every 3 years or so mainly to visit wineries, parks, and waterfalls. We always come across something new and interesting.

If you haven't already I would suggest you contact the Hoover Sailing Club http://www.hooversailingclub.com/ here in Columbus OH. They have an active Flying Scot fleet and may have used boat resources. If you can time a visit I bet you could crew in one of their frequent club races.
