Hunter H23 Verplanck, NY Hudson River
I will be moving to the Delray Beach/Boca Raton (FL) area in a year or so. I currently have a Hunter 23. What kind of sailing is available down there? I would imagine most of the sailing is in the ocean just off shore. Will the 23' be sturdy or safe enough? Will any special outfitting be necessary? Any advice and/or links for information would be appreciated!

The area is frequented by cruisers.

These people do not generally move their boats unless they are going somewhere. Daysailing can be kind of hard depending on how far your boat is from the inlet. It is not uncommon for some boats to have to motor for an hour before reaching the inlet. Calm days in the Atlantic are few and if your time off schedule does not coincide with them you may not get to sail much. I repeat and strongly recommend that you use a trailer and take the boat down to Byscaine Bay and Florida Bay down in the Keys. There the h23 will shine allowing you to go places most can't. These are some of the best sailing grounds in the world.

Up North

I know two people who have a 37 Pacific Seacraft and a 38 Hunter who keep them up on Long Island,NY. The trailer sailor sounds like a good idea. Nick

good spot.

Louis, having friends in West Palm and spending some time there, the 23 would be great down there. The ICW where DelRay Beach is a pretty wide and you could spend many days daysailing there. And on nice days, there's no reason to NOT venture out into the ocean for some fun. If you have a trailor, even better. You could then do 1 way trips to the Keys for long vacations, or just trailor the boat closer to the Keys. Launch the boat in Biscayne Bay and sail the keys. Best of luck

Careful of the inlets

If or when you do go into the inlets to get to the ocean or back in, be careful. When the current is going out and the waves are coming in it can be bad. If you get a chance try to get to Biscayne Bay. Its a little distance but very nice to see. Boca Chita Key is one of my favorites. If you have a trailer you can launch it out of Black Point. A county park in Homestead. Watch out for large power boat wakes on the weekends.
