Hi Jim,The web site below is where we would go next time. We trailor from Denver down that way occasionally. We spent a couple days on Navajo Lake on the Colo/N.Mex border. One night was great anchorage, but the second was freaky because we tried to anchor in one of its "arms" - basically a canyon filled with water: 125' deep 20 yards from shore. (Think mini - Lake Powell.) We've heard good things about Heron Lake. It is one of a pair of reservoirs, the other one set aside for speed boats. This one, the whole lake is a No Wake zone.Abiqui Reservoir is closer but smallish and surrounded by the barren beauty of northern New Mexico. It is near where Georgia O'Keefe lived and painted.Any of these areas will be a striking contrast from your surroundings in NJ. My only caution would be to have immediate respect for any thunderstorms that you see. After you get to know them, you can take chances, but at first, get off the lake ASAP and tie every thing down. Cruise the New Mexico State Parks website and check it all out.Good luck. I love that part of the country and will be there over the 4th of July, but not sailing. Cap'n JimGrizzly Bear
