Sailing in Casco Bay Maine

Sitting deep into Damariscove right now. We were the only boat here for a while until a Pacific Seacraft from Marblehead pulled in... Been out since Friday and its been pretty quiet and unseasonaly chilly today. Heater is actually on...... In June. Doh'.... Good 4G data out here daughter in v-berth watching Netflix.... Never thought I would see 4G at Damariscove...

We like Love Cove.. You probably mussed missed us we sailed up to Boothbay Friday evening...

We spent Friday night on our compulsory Jewell trip. Just a few boats that night. We anchored at high tide, the wind shifted and in the morning at dead low, the keel was just touching enough to keep us from swinging. Sounder read 2.8 . . . feet. NP.
We've never been to Love Cove but as long as my lovely bride is with me, that's all I need. (feel free to use that one guys.) We have spent a few nights in Stover Cove (first pic, far left.) Wills Gut, The Goslings, The Basin, Seguin, Damariscove. All great spots well within reach (or within) Casco Bay and very serene at night. Unless I'm there and, well, I'm a guy in my early 50's, nuff said.

We sailed right by Jewell and just kept sailing until it got dark and we were in Boothbay... Left Falmouth at 3:00.... We are now running low on Vodka anyone in the vicinity of Quahog Bay, with said elixer, please hail us on one six....
Will be up there first two weeks of September. Problem is I will be driving, bummer....
Headed to Portland, Damariscotta Lake, Bangor, Houlton and on to Trenton,Nova Scotia

Hey Jim, let us know your plans! the beer will be cold, and September is some of our best weather! the air is clear, the breeze is fresh, and the tourists are gone!
Beautiful place ! Susan and I were lucky to be able to be the day-sail guests of one of the site contributors .. We had a fine sail around the bay .. yes indeed we gawked at all the mountains and rocks.. all the neat coves and places to anchor.. Not much high land here on the gulf coast/Lake Pontchartrain ! Tallest stuff we usually see is the New Orleans skyline.. which is 24 miles or so across the lake from us, so seeing the sheer rock faces and tree studded rocks was a real treat!
Are there still free moorings in Damaris Cove? We were there several years ago and there were two? I heard there is maybe one or none now?
Just one deep enough for a sailboat it is right off the stone pier.. You can achor but be sure to back down hard and set a stern hook if deeper in... Lots of kelp on the bottom...
Last time at Damariscove, our kicker was sick and stalled 1/2 way in so we glided to the rear, dropped the Danforth to port and let it set/stop/swing us just behind the float. I rowed 50' further and set our second anchor and attached to our stern cleat. Then, to add suspenders, I attached a loose line to the float itself (not recommended) just in case things went wrong. At low, it gets to about 3 1/2 feet there. We were fine (as expected). Come morning, the kicker at 1/2 throttle took us out fine but stalled a jillion times while trying to pick up a mooring in Port Clyde. All set now though.
A bit of history on Damariscove Island. When we were there several years ago we hiked south from the pier and along the trail was a rock with a hole in it. There was a sign that stated that a spar from the HMS Boxer was used as a mast for the American flag on the island. The Boxer fought the USS Enterprise in one of the last sail powered sea battles. The Enterprise won but at the loss of both Captains. It was the war of 1812. There is a book - "Knights of the Sea" by David Hanna that descibes in detail about the battle - good read!
