We will be leaving shortly to sail in Antigua and Barbuda for two weeks. Any thoughts on anchorages and sights not be be missed will be greatfully appreciated.

Antigua has several good anchorages.

In April 2002 we spent several days in Antigua, during classic yacht week. Falmouth Harbour is good, with a good dinghy dock, restaurants, groceries, laundry and internet. It is within walking distance of English Harbor and Nelson's Dockyard, which is interesting. We walked up the hill to Shirley Heights, but I suggest taking a taxi or renting a car to tour the island. On Sundays there was a party in the evening at Shirley Heights Lookout bar and restaurant. In January 2003 as we were headed north we stopped in Five Islands Harbour on the west side and really liked it because there were no facilities, no noisy music, cars, dogs; just us and a couple of other boats in a huge bay. We don't recommend St. John's Harbour because of the poor holding or Deep Bay because it was small and crowded. We also went to Barbuda, but we were in a hurry so only stayed one night. It is very, very flat (like the Bahamas) so you don't see it until you are within a few miles. We were the only sailboat in sight in the area on the south side where we anchored. Weather could be an issue because the protection is not great. We had a great sail from Antigua to Barbuda. Enjoy you trip.

I was there a few years ago and had a great time. Maybe it was because I went with a couple of Antiguan friends, but I found the people to be very gracious. It also helps if you don't behave like a typical tourist or "yachtie". Glenda is on the money. English Harbour is worth a stop. The eastern side of Antigua is less developed and more scenic. You can try a day trip to Montserrat to eyeball the volcano from a safe distance. The western side of Antigua is good if you're not comfortable with trade winds and big waves. There are several restaurants right on the beach in Dickenson Bay. Ask Nash to guide you if you want to go to Barbuda and are unsure about the navigation. Good luck and have a blast. Enjoy !!!

We just got back from 2 weeks on a 50 foot Beneteau in the BVI. We booked with the Moorings in Tortolla. A different island every day, plently of sun, snorkling, and cliff climbing - too much food and drink. A bottle of Captain Morgans Spiced Rum - 8 bucks... Really hard to come back... to REALITY.
