Sailing from Waikiki

Hi!

I am staying in Waikiki for the next three weeks and have never sailed in Hawaii. Does anyone have a good recommendation for me and my wife to hitch a ride on a sailboat? I don't mind paying, I just don't want to do the super commercial 100 people on a catamaran trip.

Any help is appreciated!

Put an ad on Craigs List. Ask to crew with someone. You might get lucky.

Go to Waikiki Yacht Club's website. they have a section where owners are looking for crew for evening races etc. Kaneohe Yacht club has a similar website. You might be able to at least get a lead from there...

My experience on the Islands is that it's very difficult to find a sailing charter on a conventional sailboat. It is 98% tourist catamarans. Main reason is that the waters are actually quite rough down there. They need to cater to the majority and most tourists would have a tough time on a regular boat given the wind and sea state.

Like DougM says, best bet is asking around one of the local sailing clubs. One guy who might be able to help you is Chuck Rose. He and his wife have sailed extensively out of Hawaii and I think he's pretty plugged in. Not sure why you would want to stay in Waikiki for three weeks. There are nicer spots to be than hanging with the tourists in HI, there. But, you can nose around in harbors on O'ahu and let your desires be known and maybe you will score. There is the Waikiki YC as already mentioned on Ala Moana Blvd. On the Sand Island Access Road there is the Keehi Small Boat Harbor where they allow live-aboards and then also try Ko-Olina Marina on the Makaha side of the island. That is one of the newest and nicest that also allow live-aboards and there are a lot of sailboats there. Then the Kane'ohe YC on the windward side of the island, but that is private and not easy to just walk into.

Try This

Put a case of beer under each arm and head over to the Ala Wai boat harbor. It is the one right next to the Ilikai. I think there is a West Marine right across the street that might be a good spot to check as well. Someone will offer you a ride. The Hawaii and Waikiki Yacht clubs could be good bets as well but are private clubs and without a reciprocal agreement or a sponsor the welcome may be to the parking lot not into the club. It has been a while since I lived there but there is a marina off of Sand Island that was mostly junked up liveaboards but that may be an option as well. It is not typically rough out there so do not let that keep you from trying to find a ride.

Check Honolulu Sailing. They do bareboat rentals. And always drag a tuna lure.
Also if you're stuck in Honolulu for 3 weeks hop a flight to Kauai for afew days and get out of the craziness.
