We're sailing a Hunter 340 from Mystic to Nantucket. Unfortunately, we are short on time. Trying to plan the fastest route without sailing at night. Any suggestions?? Thanks!!

How much time do you have?

Personally, I would break it up into three days. 1st day I would stop at Cuttyhunk. Day 2 Vineyard Haven or Edgartown, then on to Nantucket the next day. If you want to bypass Cuttyhunk to save a day, it's going to be a REAL long day to make it from Mystic to Vineyard Haven. It is doable in one day.

I agree with Mark

3 days is fairly easy. We have done it many times in our previous 30' Morgan, slowere than your h34. Mark has named the best stops. I would opt for Vineyard Haven because it is fast and easy to get in and out of. The only info that I can add is to consult Eldridge for the currents in Vineyard Sound and Nantucket Sound. These can make or break a 2/3 day trip. In the Vineyard Sound, the current can run 3-4 knots peak and in Nantucket 2-3kts. Also, pay attention to the section in Eldridge that speaks about traversing Block Island Sound and going from Pt. Judith toward Vineyard Sound. Of special note is the fact that ebbing current between Mystic and Pt. Judith runs east and flooding current in Vineyard Sound ALSO runs east. If you time your passage right you can ride BOTH currents and really make time over ground. Rich

Tides are the key

The tides will be the key to how long it will take. If you hit them right you could do it in 2 days. Hit them wrong and it could be 3 long days. We went from Wickford to Falmouth in one day againt the current. We had the wind on the nose and ran the engin the entire way. (make sure to use quicks cut, its wide and less current than woods hole. You DO NOT want to go the route south of the vinyard, check the cruising guides) The next day was short enough but we had 4-6' square waves on the nose (not normal wind direction) so ran the engin again. (real bumpy ride) The trip home REQUIRED radar due to blanket fog. When are you going? May want to make the trip again. RREgge S/V Allie Kat
