I am new to sailing and have a MacGregor 26S. I would like to sail from Long Beach area to Catalina Island. Any suggestions or things I need to be aware of? Anyone done this in a MacGregor?

Long Beach to Catalina

MacGregors of all sizes including 21' and my 22' have been sailed to Catalina. I suggest that you only do so after you are competent and comfortable in your 26S. Also, the first time, be sure to have at least one competent sailor with you and also another sailboat to accompany yours. Sailing to the Isthmus is mostly a beat and uncomfortable but sailing from Long Beach to Avalon is a much easier sail. Good luck, Duane "Novelman"

not for the uninitiated

A trip like that is quite a bit different than sailing a bay or lake. Respectfully, if you have to ask "Any suggestions or things I need to be aware of?" than I'd say you aren't ready. If you are just asking if a Mac will make the journey then I'd say yes.

not to add shipping lanes and fog

only from what I read on this board... fog and shipping lanes can be a problem for that trip. fwiw, -boats us 'unlimited towing'... is cheap insurance at $109/yr.

done it many times

ive taken my 22 to avalon many times usualy in the summer when the weather is a little more predictable. i usually launch at queensgate ramp and depending on the tide the channel can be riddled with sandbars. i usualy use the kicker and dont lower the keel til i clear the queen mary. get the boat us coverage and take a radio and you. you should be fine there are alot of boats making that crossing on fairweather days and its a great overnight trip. if you are still aprehensive about your abilities then get to know your boat a lil better but its a great trip and one you will love. oh one more watch out for the frieghters they move alot faster then you might think
