I just finished the ASA basic sailing course 101. And have rented a Catalin 27 and a O'Day 30' for a while. Until I complete ASA 103 which allow we to rent up to a 40 foot sailboat. Mywife and I thought we would get a older Catalina 30 for somewhere around 25,000. We would like a bigger boat for costal cursing with friends.(To Catalina and to the Channel Islands. Can anyone give he a idea of how different a 30 foot handles than a 36 foot. I feel confortable saling the 30 but I'm note sure about the 36. Any words of advice? Respedtfully Tom K

as boat length becomes larger, the moment of enertia increases. what this means is the motion of a larger boat is less radid than a smaller boat. this is not to say the ultimate speed is less, just that the boat will react to initial input from helm and sails slower. a good comparison is sailing the 27 footer your rented compared to the 30 footer. by the way, i owned a 30 and 36 foot catalina, and now live on a 380. the 36 is a wonderful sailing boat.

the question is unclear
it's confusing whether you want a 30 or 36, but anyway the size of the boat means less than the design. a catalina 30 would have more than enough of what you seem to want and is easy to handle: a j30 is neither, but a much better racer.
