Makes it easier to prove date and source of origination. Regardless, I believe that we all benefit when we can share the pleasure sailing gives us with those who have yet to experience its joys. If this bit of philosophy can bring one new spirit to the art or prevent one from being driven off, it has far greater value than any modest honorarium a publisher might grant. Thanks for the kudos.

depends on ....

of course, sailing with my girlfriend is great. She's a better sailor than me, can trim the sails like a pro and isn't scared of anything (plus, the bikini's she wears are stunning) BUT...I like to race on weekends and she likes to relax. She has raced with me but it's not fun to her, especially if there is a light wind and it's hot. When there's a race she either 1. doesn't come out with me and stays at the club 2. she races with me but when she either gets too hot or there is little wind (I push on) she will sabotage my race by jumping in the water (it works and she laughs seeing me all pissed off) 3. when there's lots of wind, she doesn't mind racing. If I can't get her to crew with me for races, the best sailing partner is anyone who will come along......

Coming from San Francisco Bay to south Florida was a shift from feast to famine for "crew." Larry of Bass River, NJ--get your brother and let's start a triangle of sharing crew/skipper duties, and include my Ericson 32 for the winter times when you can't play on yours.

And since I've said it so often I'd be convicted even if it WAS an accident, I'll say what I joked before we wed: There will be no divorces in my life, only boating accidents! And so the squeamish among you can really get a cringe from my twisted sense of humor, in this year of my twentieth anniversary my favorite party line has become: If I'd murdered her instead, I'd be getting out now! But seriously, my wife is the light of my life. Without her life has no meaning. I'm the lucky one in every way.... (Uh-oh)usually. (I can't contol myself)Now how could she have missed that (somebody stop me) September 11th flight to California? Ahhh... sweet pity. Where would my love life be without it? -- Homer (Simpson, of course)

My Spouse, is my First Mate, Last Mate, Life Mate, Soul Mate.... and she's smiling really big while she's looking over my shoulder as I write this... Don't know what I'd do without her. :)

My favorite sailing companion is my best friend who was the person who first took me sailing 7-8 years ago on Lake Lizzy. He was my pastor and still is my best friend. He and his family moved to Chicago 6 years ago, but we still sail together at least one week a year. We have always had a great time! We had a couple of mishaps and tons of laughs and hours of peace! His son John (the originator of Capt. Spiffy)and Bub have sailed with us many times too. Sadly, Bub's last sail was last June. He died in January. He will be missed as he loved to sail too. I salute you all who love to sail whether with a spouse or friend or dog or on your own! I know I love to sail with anyone who loves to sail. As for the PFD's I wear one if the weather goes bad, but I am 55 and I should be able to make that decision myself. I can also tell you that if I had my choice I'd rather die sailing at too early an age than live sitting in a wheel chair wearing diapers and drooling on myself for 20 years! Not a pretty picture, give me the perfect storm!

My children make the best crew.

I spend about 75% of my time sailing alone. While this requires a heightened sense of awareness for weather, etc. it makes me a better sailor. My favorite sailing companion(s) are my grown children. Any one, or all three, make the cruise more enjoyable. They are becoming fine sailors and wonderful friends at sea. Soon we'll start trining the next generation.

My crew is well trained in MOB. We practice it and we depend on eachother with our lives.

Accidents are not planned

Of course my wife is my sailing companion. Whenever we are under sail we wear our life jackets - if you think you feel "uncool" wearing a PDF - think how uncool you will feel watching your boat sail away while you are treading water without one. We don't plan to fall overboard - we dont plan knock downs, accidental jibes, or sinkings. But if we end up in the water we both know the other person will be on the surface when we return. On our my first trip to the coast with my C22 we had a knock down - my daughter thought the boat was sinking so she jumped overboard wearing foul weather grear, long sleeve shirt, wool sweater, jeans and boots. If she was not wearing her PDF our four weeks of awsome memories would not have happened.

My son

My 22 year old Eagle Scout (sailing merit badge qualified) son is my best mate. He watched Captain Ron just before we bought our 30 Catalina and had the same enthusiasm as the kid in the movie did when he found out they "were getting a boat". It has been smooth sailing sense. Only problem now that he is older is getting our schedules to align. According to him if you come aboard you have to go by "boat rank" not "family rank". In other words his older brother and sister are "swabs" in his eyes.;D

I agree with Chris... Wives are the best!

Our sailboat has been more of a joy than I realized. My wife and I BOTH enjoy sailing. The fact that we are both learning together has made sailing a true lifestyle for us both. To what chris wrote I would add: support+ encouragement + respect = many hours of pure bliss! She is the joy of both my life and my sailing!

When sailing Ice "scooters" on the Great South Bay ,Long Island New York, we trail a line of about 50 ft. behind the boat. If you are sailing alone and fall off the boat heads up and it tends to bring the line to you giving you a chance to catch her. I also do this on my 24' Columbia when single handing.A monky's fist bent over a rubber ball at the end of the line and some footholds at the stern can get you back aboard.Cheap insurance. B.
