I hope this is an appropriate topic, but I'm kind of curious what cameras people are using to capture those great sailing images we all come across. I just bought a new digital camera for my wife on her birthday. I love it when I can get her a gift that that I'll love using :). Picked up a Canon A610. With 5 Megapixels, 4X optical Zoom, and 2 inch LCD window, plus more automatic and manual settings and modes than I will (she'll) probably ever use, it's a modern marvel. And it shoots videos too! This is to replace a 5 year old Canon A20. The flash burned out on it, and at 2 megapixels, 3X zoom, and 1.5 in LCD, I'm not going to get it repaired. It still works fine outdoors anyway. The A20 was pretty well regarded when I bought it, but the new camera has 3 times the capability, and cost less than the old one did. I'm amazed at how fast the technology is advancing. I miss using my SLR film cameras and lenses, but the digital cameras are so simple and cost effective. I made a slow transition to digital by buying a dedicated film scanner. This actually works very well. I went this route for a number of years but I still have to go to the trouble of developing film. I also have a canon waterproof 35 millimeter snorkeling camera that is great for rainy day shooting, or taking pictures when the waves are breaking on deck, or the rare Caribbean snorkeling vacation. There are a lot of other great cameras available these days, so what are some other boat friendly cameras that people are using to save those sailing memories?

I hear you.

I recently went to a Nikon 4600 4 Megapixels 3x optical zoom; but I do miss my Pentax SLR.

I take pictures of people sailing a mile away and they don't even know it :) One of these days I'm going to catch somebody tanning :)

don't go overboard

Try the Pentax WPi Digital Camera. Small, 6 Meg, 3x Optical zoom and most important Class 8 waterproof. This camera will go in the water if need be. Great for the sailboat, canoe, Kayak or Iraq. ( It is also sand proof)

just waiting for the next shipment of them so that I am sure that they will have fixed the banding problem.

Panasonic Lumix

is probably not the first camera that comes to mind, but it has 5 MP, 12X OPTICAL zoom, and most importantly--image stabilization. Oh yes, the Leica lens helps a bit too!

Nikon D70

Since I already had a Nikon N80 moving to the D70 allowed me to use all my lenses etc... I have taken shots of most of our dock buddies and print on an HP8450. Works great for me, and for those of you who miss your SLR you can't tell the difference in feel or quality of prints. John

We use a Sony video camera for most all...

of our pics.. It does both video and still. I installed four camera mounts; one below decks and three top side so that I can take pics while solo sailing. Bud
