We're going round next June or July, starting from Port Hardy around mid-June and taking 4-6 weeks on 'the outside' I'm sure there are lots of mid-larger Catalinas have been around - any stories or favourite places or warnings you'd be willing to share? Thanks. RG

Great sailing

There are alot of great places to sail around the Island. Desolation sound, Shoal bay, thetis Island and all the coves and bays north are perfect. Just make sure you have Murrays tables and the Current atlas because the currents are strong through that stretch of water, sometimes reaching 6knts in some areas. I'm sure it will be an unforgettable trip, because some of the best sailing on the west coast is in our back yard. Cheers

Vancouver Island

Hi RB - What a great trip! I've circumnavigated Vancouver Island twice - in 1995 aboard my Islander 28, and again in 2001 on my Catalina 36. I took 8 - 9 weeks each trip. You can do it in less, but there's so much to see out there that it's a shame to rush it. When I don't have as much time I've headed up the outside to Barkley and Clayaquot Sounds instead of going all the way around. Be flexible, pick your weather windows, and enjoy all there is to see. I hope to post some of my photos on a web site one of these days with some stories - too many to tell here! I'm happy to share any of my experiences with anyone who's interested. One bit of advice is to read the Douglass' book "Exploring Vancouver Island's West Coast" cover to cover. It'll help familiarize yourself with the area before you get there. Good winter reading to get you fired up! Best, Trevor

Try this book

It's "Circumnavigating Vancouver Island" by Roger L. Rue, Evergreen Pacific Marine Publishing (1982). It's really good for what you want. Don't know how hard it might be to find. About 125 pages. Chapters include: Suggested itinerary (52 pages) Which Dinghy? (5 pages) How much time? (2 pages) Fog (3 pages) Radio (4 pages) What charts (2 pages) Hazards (2 pages) Sketch charts (18 pages) And more... The "Suggested Itinerary" chapter tells you where to stop, how long to next anchorage, what's interesting at them, etc. I've never made the trip, but always had that dream. This book is lots more than a cruising guide or coast pilot. Gives all the stuff you'd ask if someone who has done it was sitting next to you at the bar in the clubhouse.... Good luck, and be sure to report back! Peter

It's on Amazon

Rue's book is 24.99 on Amazon Recommend it highly. (Or maybe you could see that) And no, I'm not related to Rue in any way.

Favorite spots

I would highly recommend the book "Exploring the West Coast of Vancouver Island" by Don Douglas. Take as much time as you possibly can as there is a lot to see. I took 7 weeks to circumnavigate the Island and felt rushed to see as much as I would have liked. Favorite spots are the Bunsby Islands just south of Brooks Peninsula and Barkley Sound. I would also recommend radar if you are going to be there in late July or August as you will get a lot of fog in the mornings and be sure you have up to date large scale charts. It really is a beautiful area. Have Fun!

See you out there!

Hi RB, Well maybe we'll see you out there. We're planning a six week circumnavigation next summer leaving about the third or fourth week of June and returning in early August. We plan to focus on the Northern half of both the inside and the outside as we've cruised extensively in the southern parts of both sides. We're planning to get back relatively early as we found the West Coast weather to be beautiful in July and very foggy (nearly every day) in August. If you want to send me an email (gwyngarden@rockisland.com) I'll pass on our itinerary which reflects of our reading and thoughts to date. Hope you have a great trip!
