Does anyone have experience sailing in the Phoenix Arizona area? Where can you sail? - I've looked at a map and ..... I dont see much blue! I am thinking about a possible move but think I will miss the ocean. And what's it like sailing in that 110 deg weather? Thanks for any suggestions/expereinces etc etc Bob

Sailing Arizona

Robert Lake Pleasant is the most popular lake for sailing in the Phoenix area. There is a full service marina (http://www.pleasantharbor.com). Most sailboats sail from October thru about the end of May. There is also the Arizona yacht club (http://arizonayachtclub.org) which has regular racing series. There is also a sailboat shop (http://home.att.net/~kehgchu/sail.az.html) located in close proximity to the south ramp of the marina, which includes a launch service. For being located in the desert the rates for all services are not cheap. I guess that is all a matter of perspective though. And as for being desert the proportion of boats versus residents is actually very high. Hope this is some help

You CAN sail in the desert

Robert you CAN sail in the desert. Here are you best options as I see them: 1. Lake Pleasant with a great marina, and dry storage lot. 2. Lake Roosevelt north east of the city 3. Puerto Penasco (Rocky Point)in Mexico 4. Bahia Kino in Mexico 5. And the best by far ... SAN CARLOS in Mexico The Tuscon Sailing Club is very active there with two regattas a year ... and has a website. The next regatta is scheduled for November 12-13 ... give the them a call and see if someone needs crew. Ol' Dave

Be ready to Trailer

Actually the water is cooler and there is good wind. There are major lakes but few destinations for cruising in them. You have to pick your anchoring spots as these lakes can be quite deep. A keel boat would be a waste. Be ready to trailer and have a good strong towing vehicle as most lakes are at a distance and at higher elevations. The boat of choice out there is a power boat and you will find most ramps are to short for sailboats. Spray your boat while on the hard to keep spyders away. Keel boat sailors keep their boats in San Diego. I spent a year there but missed the ocean and the smell of humid air.
