Was out yesterday in 20+ winds. Had the reef in on my main. In some gusts we heeled quite dramatically then the boat headed up on its own. Is this normal? Even with the tiller pulled in tight it did this.

Yep, That is How it'l Always Happen

If you can tear yourself away to look back at the rudder it is dang near out of the water. Without the rudder to keep you against the wind the boat turns itself into the wind. I have tried and tried to get further over just to terrorize the crew but the best I can do is put the windows in the water like a glass bottom boat.

It's the same with my 23.5

I like to put the windows in the water and have the boat spin out into the wind. It has also reassured the crew that the boat cannot tip over. I told them the boat won't turn over unless the waves are over 7 feet high we avoid conditions like that!

way to far

YOu will note that the design of the hull is flatter. Basically, you do not have to heel over 15 degrees max. You will loose performance plus fight the boat not only scaring the hell out of those with you. When in 20 plus winds, you really need to be ready for a gust. If you are feeling too much tension on the wheel or rudder, then let the mainsheet out as you are actually slowing the boat down. If you are sailing in areas with constant high wind, then maybe a second reef. Boats are designed to head into the wind when overpowered. On paper and in most cases that is true but there are other circumstances. If you sail purposesly heeled way over, you invite trouble as someone could possibly fall out and if hit by a wave, the boat could be tossed over. Someone could die. Crazy Dave Condon

Dave, ya mean you've never driven that puppy...

...like a Sunfish! It can be lots of fun, I do it when alone or with other sailors only and like anything potentially dangerous, do it as carefully as possible. The price we pay for a large cabin is windage. The price we pay for water ballast is tenderness. Sooooooooo, reef early, reef the head sail too. Points better and goes faster to weather with both up even partially. On a beam reach or run you don't need the head sail. You will find that the boat goes to wind quite a bit faster at ten knots of breeze than twenty because of the above. alan

Alan

For your information, I have sailed all the water ballast boats in all types of conditions. It was I who suggested to Hunter to build the water ballast and gave quite a bit of imput on the boats. In fact, I have introduced everyone one of them. I only have opinions based on the experience which is alot more than most but the one thing that I am a firm believer is to respect the wate and to have fun at the same time. Putting the rubrail into the water is scary, very hard to manuever and the ;most important unsafe. I have seen alot in my time and alot of injuries. Crazy Dave Condon

I agree with ya Dave, but...

...sometimes get a thrill of riding the edge. Wouldn't do it with the kids or anyone not used to it. Water and weather must always be respected. Lots of things we do have risks. I think it's how we manage and recognize them. Not knocking the boat either (except that *%$#*^% rudder). alan

Over powering the rig

One of the things that hasn't been mentioned is when you overpower the boat enough to have it round up you are putting a lot of additional stress on the rig. Keep it up and you may have it in your lap one day.

thank you Mr. Richards

You are absolutley correct and I have replaced rigging and of course masts as a result or what you mentioned. A mast coming down is a dangerous situation which some folks do not take into account. Crazy Dave

To reduce the effect of weather helm (which is a good condition and what everyone is talking about) you ease the mainsheet traveler leeward(installed by the previous owner 2 inches aft of the companion way edge) and steering improves not only a little but an unbelieveiable ammount. Now 20 deg of heel is very controllable and you can pinch more and much easier. Hydrotherapy Dave Oberholtzer

John, Were you sailing at Cave Run on Saturday while the UK Wildcats lost to LSU? Pretty windy day. We took our 240, Alrightie Then, off buoy 21 two weeks ago for the winter. Are you at the Marina or on a buoy? Bob Kalisz Alrightie Then

Will Cave Run freeze up?

I have sailed at Cave Run but it has been a while since I was last there. Had to pick up a Hunter 26 as the owner who I considered a friend loved to sail there. He past away two years ago. Let me knwo if the lake freezes up this year. For those of you who want to know where Cave Run is, travel on I 64 appx 1 1/2 hours west of Huntington, WV into KY,. Crazy Dave Condon
