we are considering a move to Ashland Oregon. Could anyone out there inform us as to the sailing possibilities in that area. We now sail on Lake Superior so we do know cold and cold water. Sailing needs to be suitable for a 34 foot boat. Any help will be much appreciated.

Not Bluewater Friendly
If you're addicted to bluewater or 'big water' and bigger boats this is not the best location. To keep your boat in the water one would be looking at Coos Bay or Crescent City, both areas where it can get fairly nasty even during the good times. Coos Bay has a bar to cross and neither place has much in the way of destinations but then that is fairly typical on most of the west coast. Portland on the Columbia, San Francisco Bay, and Pudget Sound are very long distances to drive. A plane could be helpful except for mountain passes north and south of Ashland and thunderstorm activity in the Sacramento Valley and the Willamate Valley. Summertime days on the coast can often be thick with fog in the morning and late afternoon. Plan B is to scale back to a trailer sailer, say 23 or 25 footer. Lake Shasta is a water skiing and house boat lake with numerous canyons causing fluky and gusty winds; banks are red clay soil and largely exposed in the summer since this is a hydroelectric reservoir. Goose Lake near Klamath Falls is a shallow lake with little shoreline available for beaching. Looks better on a map - good for centerboarders. Lake Whiskytown near Lake Shasta would be very hard for towing a boat and trailer due to numerous steep grades to go over mountain passes. All the other reservoirs will be very small compared to what you're accustomed to. No matter how one looks at it, it'll probably require some lifestyle changes. On the plus side, there is good alpine skiing close by!

In one of the replies, it is stated that to reach Whiskeytown Lake, one must drive over steep mountain passes. This is not the case. If you are driving south from Ashland Oregon, Whiskeytown will be only 1/2 hour away from Lake Shasta. There is virtually no moorage for sailboats on Lake Shasta. It is powerboat oriented, and most moorage is covered. Whiskeytown is a beatiful sailing lake that is maintained at maximum pool level throughout the spring and summer seasons. There is ample moorage for sailboats, and it is reasonably priced, and includes piped water and shore power. You will find that the two marinas there cater primarily to sailors. In coming years, powerboats will be banned, according to the National Park Service's Master Plan for the lake. Why not move to Redding, CA?
