Whiskeytown - the Lake for Sailors
In one of the replies, it is stated that to reach Whiskeytown Lake, one must drive over steep mountain passes. This is not the case. If you are driving south from Ashland Oregon, Whiskeytown will be only 1/2 hour away from Lake Shasta. There is virtually no moorage for sailboats on Lake Shasta. It is powerboat oriented, and most moorage is covered. Whiskeytown is a beatiful sailing lake that is maintained at maximum pool level throughout the spring and summer seasons. There is ample moorage for sailboats, and it is reasonably priced, and includes piped water and shore power. You will find that the two marinas there cater primarily to sailors. In coming years, powerboats will be banned, according to the National Park Service's Master Plan for the lake. Why not move to Redding, CA? Whiskeytown is only 20 minutes away, and the Sacramento Delta and San Franciso Bay are easily reached. Lots of good sailing to be had!Don Barber,Redding, CA
