I just started learning how to sail in Oct of 2003 here in San Francisco. I bought a 22 foot Oday sailboat in Nov.2003 and now at the End of October of 2004 my count on my Log book shows I have a combination total of 36 days and evening sails. I'm wondering how often do other people take thier boats out in a year. Their seem to be a lot of boats in the marina that has not move in a while.

36=3 per month, we do 3 to 4 a week

Ike, We can sail that many times a week because we are sailing a Cat 22. You can blow your nose on a boat that small and that cleans her up after after your trip. When we were living aboard our 38' IP we only sailed when we were moving her to a new island or visiting a new port. It took about 1/2 a day to clean her up and to secure everything to weigh anchor and leave. It took a full day to put her to rest at our new location. Day sails were usually done on friends boats. It simply was too much work for a day sail. A non-liveaboard large boat falls somewhere in between and there are always exceptions to everything. The heart sets the schedule and some hearts beat much stronger than others. Ray

Lots of Use!

We have spent 76 days aboard our Hunter 356 this year with 53 sails. Some of our days are short as we arrive at the marina after 10PM some Thursdays for a weekend stay. We can get out of the dock in about 5 minutes the way we are organized and can shut down the boat for leaving in about thirty minutes. Some consider us a "floating condo" as we have heat and air, all the amenities and tracking sat tv with a genset. We are so comfortable, that is why we use the boat a lot. We have a full enclosure which we can subtract or add parts to that extends our season about a month on each side of the summer. We have boat slip neighbors who use their boats about as much as we do. We enjoy not only the boating, but the social life of the marina and the activities of the sailing club. All these things make a great boating experience for us.

25 times

Between work, golf, family obligations, and inclement weather when I do have the time, I still got out 25 times, and logged 250 nautical miles for the season. I have a C22 swing keel in a slip at Pymatuning Lake, in Jamestown PA.

Hello, I just checked my log. I have sailed 41 times this year (since this is NY the boat went in the water 5/31, and will be hauled out in the next few weeks). I hope to get 1 or 2 more sails in. I have been on the boat every few days. I don't know what I'm going to do when it's hauled out! Most of my trip have been short 2-4 hours. I hope to make some longer trips next year. Barry

the logbook sez...

I keep a running tab of sailing days, any day that the boat is out of the slip and the sails are up. (As opposed to days spent on anchor or short trips to the pump-out dock. So far we've logged 439 sailing days in 6.5 years. Averages out to about 68 days per year. I average another 30 days per year sailing other people's boats, mostly races but one good delivery per year as well. Of course, it helps not to have to winterize your boat.

1 day housekeeping, 1 day sailing per weekend

I think Ray's point about using a larger boat reflects my experience pretty well. My Cal 28-2 has all of the systems on a bigger boat (inboard diesel, wheel steering, head/shower/hot water heater, etc.). My season consisted of one weekend day of housekeeping and one weekend day of sailing. The setup, cleanup, and catchup with maintenance really takes some time if you want things right. I think after a couple more seasons with this boat I'll have caught up with a lot of long-term maintenance and then the need for the housekeeping day will lessen (or I'll be a fool and sell the boat and start it all over again with something else...)

Our goal was to disprove the old saw

that the number of days a boat gets used is inversely proportional to its length. We've used our C34 once a week all year, PLUS one 10 day trip to the Delta, and at least 5 overnights of two or three days on the Bay, like the Catalina Rendezvous at Angel Island. I think we've been very successful. :) Work days are not included above. Stu

One year total

Like Ike we bought our O'Day 302 in Nov. 2003. The log says we did 36 day/afternoon sails, 8 one night trips, 6 two night trips, and one 7 night trip (Catalina for Buccaneers Days). Hope to get in at least one or two more weekend trips this year. We love everything about having a sailboat, the people we meet, the time on the water sailing, being at anchor out at the islands, and even the time we spend doing maint. Dave
