I have an O'day 28 vintage 1978 with the original OMC saildrive. All is well...except that the engine is nolonger bringing in water. I suspect it is the impeller and was wondering how to acceess it wqithout taking the boat out of the water. Any suggestions?

ya' gotta' pull her

Sorry to say that there is no getting at the impeller without pulling the boat. You can disconnect the powerhead from the transmission but looking at my engine manual it appears that there is no getting at the impeller while in the water.

Out she comes

The impeller on the OMC is just an inch or so below the waterline, you will need to pull the boat to replace it. Additionally, it makes things easier to address if problems are incountered. If this is the 1st time you've done a job like this, be carefull and clam. the bolts are old and likely corroded. Get your self a good set of 6pnt box end wrenches to avoid rounding off any bolts. FYI, I've got a 1980 28'. It had an OMC saildrive. I finally got the money together to replace it with a Yanmar. Honda also makes a saildrive sutable for the Oday. Pick up a good old boat magazine and look for the adds. Good luck!
