I sent my torn genoa to Sailcare about four weeks ago, got it back last week. It took 1-2 weeks longer than expected, but it is gorgeous.

They did some repair work too, it's hard to compare repair costs apples-to-apples, but I think their repair rates are better than what I have experienced locally.

Cleaning, re-resin, repair of a three foot tear where the leach tape separated from the main panels and reinforcement of the tack was $330. I am very happy, thought you should know.

When winter comes I will send in my main and jib.

They did a 're-do' on some sails for me a few years back...GREAT work...repair rates were very reasonable and the cleaning/re-resin process seemed to work very well.

I highly recommend them.

I've used Sailcare for many years and have been generally satisfied with their work. They can't bring a tired sail back to life, but they can keep your pretty good sails in pretty good shape and I think their rates are competitive. See below.

"Dacron sails are cleaned at .95 per sq. ft. up to 450 sq. ft. Over that the cost is $1.00 per sq. ft. up to 600 sq. ft. Above 600 sq. ft. you need to call for pricing. Nylon sails such as spinnakers are only washed. The charge is .40 per sq. ft.

Repairs and/or modifications are performed at $48.00 per hour + parts and/or material used. Some modifications have set prices."

My primary concern with Sailcare is that they've gotten too popular. They now process well over 3,000 sails per year -- and are having a tough time keeping up with demand. Best to send them your sails in the off season.

Another positive comment

I used SailCare to do some cleaning, reconditioning and modify a jib and the work was execellent. I strongly recommend them but do not wait until the last minute. I sent my work in to them in November and got it back in February.

Dancing Bear?...Just be careful

If the sail material is weak to begin with, they will still re-resin the sail and charge you. Then when you do use it, it could tear again. When you send the sails to them, ask them the question. I have no other complaints about them, but when I sent my main to them, everything seemed OK. When I got it back (it looked great!!), it split on the reef line and I bought a new sail instead!

The Tear

The tear was caused by my bad planning (too much sail, too much wind, no stopper knot on the sheet, very impressive flailing results causing the rip, better sailor for it), the material is in pretty good shape, and I am happy with the $300 spent.

I will definitely have my jib worked on, I am not sure about the main, your words of caution are appreciated.
