I'm thinking of sending my roller furled genoa to SailCare to be cleaned and refurbished (LeMaury proces etc...) I have read the previous discussions about this company and my question is......... How does the process affect the Sunbrella UV cover on the Genoa? Do they remove it first? No affect on the cover? I've sent SailCare a question and am awaiting their response, but would like to hear from customers. Thank you for your reply, MArc

Sailcare

I sent both my roller furling genoa and in-mast reefing main to sailcare last winter. I can't answer your specific questions because my sails didn't have UV covers. I had Sailcare install them as well as rehab the sails. I am completely satisfied with the results

Specific Questions

Regarding SailCare services and product: Did the sail change color after time in the sun? Was the stitching on the sail a heavy thread made for UV light? Did they fix the leech lines/foot lines with cleats? Was there leather covers on the clew? tack? Did they have sail furling tape repaired? Did they use a hot-knife to cut edges so fraying would not result in wear? Thank you

Marc Why not call them on the telephone? They're great and friendly folks. I have my mainsail in for reconditioning now, and will report on the results when I get it back in a few weeks. BTW, most of your questions are answered right on their website, under services. Stu

Sailcare, etc

I just got my genoa back from Sailcare. Looks great. It has UV protection on the foot and leech. As this is the part that is most exposed when the sail is furled, it was the dirtiest. Sailcare cleaned everything, used their process to re-resin the sail, and did some minor stitching repairs at the corners (after contacting me first). I don't think they would routinely remove the UV strips prior to processing the sail as that would seem to be unnecessary, probably very time consuming and expensive, UNLESS you wanted those strips replaced as they are sacrificial. But if they are in good shape, I think they just clean them with the rest of the sail. I very happy with the way my sail looks. FYI, they offer a 15 per cent discount if you get your sail in to them prior to Dec 31st.

What about the sail shape?

I have seen sails refurbished by Sailcraft & they do a great job, but the sailshape remains the same. If your sail is blown out, cleaning up the sail with their process brings back your sail looking good, but not recut. Sail shape is everything when it comes to better sailing performance (racing or cruising). If your sail is old and blown out as well as stained, save the money that you will spend on Sailcraft and apply it toward a new or newer sail. If you have a sail that has a decent shape, but looks bad, then Sailcraft is a good consideration.

Sail Shape?

I had my sails done by SailCare two years ago. They did a great job and my sails looked like new. SailCare's repairs were also done very good. What I never thought of was that the sails may be stretched/blown out when I had it done. SailCare never told me how stretched or weak they were. Also, if your sail material is tired or weak, the process will not help them. The sail material will still remain weak. Subsequently, last summer, I blew out the main. It was when I brought it to the sailmaker for repairs that I found out how stretched and weak the material was. I also ordered a new sail in the fall to replace the main. Lots of money down the drain (so to speak). Recommendation: Have your sails evaluated by a reputable sailmaker before you send them out to see if it's worth it to invest the money for the process.

Sailcare Rocks!

I sent my main and jib into them this fall for cleaning am very pleased with their work. They replaced the leech lines and I also had them add a second reef point in between the existing reef point and a full sail. They do quality work.

My follow up...

I sent the sail off today. I did hear back from Sail Care and was assured the "Process" does not negatively effect the UV cover. That was my concern. Thank you for your replies, I will keep you posted of the results! Marc OC 350 Miami, Fl.

Sunbrella Repellency

Once you get your sails back you may want to spray the Sunbrella UV cover on the Genoa with 303 High Tech Fabric Guard, recommended for Sunbrella. This will rerstore the repellency. Sold at West Marine. Paul
