All the comforts of home......

If it has all the comforts of say...a self-contained motorhome, then it's probably a yacht. My Mac 25 with an added 20 foot center section to stretch out the hull, like they do with airliners, would be a yacht. Call me when someone starts selling that add-on center section.

a yacht is a state of mind

I think a yacht is one of those boats that never leave the slip. I have a sailboat, and I hope you all do too.:)

Yachts

A boat is what you own, a yacht is the one you can't afford.

Ice Cream

The difference between a "boat" and a "yacht" is ICE CREAM. If you can keep "ice cream" on a "boat," then it's a "yacht."

That was a yacht!!

My wife and I were seated out on the deck at the Crab Claw restaurant in St Michaels Md. where, I'm sure, most of you Chesapeake Bay sailors have been. An older couple was seated one table away. When they finished they got up and walked to the sea wall and clinbed down into a beautiful Adarandack mahogany canoe. They shoved off toward the other side of the creek. They were headed toward a tremondous 80 some foot old Trumphy. As they came near a young man in white shorts, knee socks, and cap came out on deck and with the push of a button lowered the gangway to water level, went topsides, smartly lowered the hoist, came back down to greet the returning couple, helped them up to the cabin, scampered back down the gangway, secured the slings, back up to the top and pushed a button and raised the canoe up to the top deck and set it in it's cradle, washed it off, covered it with fitted canvas and returned to the cabin. All of us at the restaurant watched this act from start to finish without a word from anyone. The whole scene was so perfect we all clapped as though at a play. That was a yacht!!!

26' or over

My insurance company defined a yacht as anything over 26'. But our old 1970 26' didn't feel like a yacht. Our new boat, on the other hand, feels like a yacht every time I pay the insurance bill :)

In the eye of the beholder

I'm with John J from Atlanta. But I really think I own a boat. My non-boating friends think I own a yacht...

Yacht II

One of the funniest things I've ever seen was an old, beat up van on the Garden State Parkway (in NJ, in case) pulling an old, beat up aluminum rowboat type vessel. Spray painted on the stern of the boat was "Yacht II." I always wondered what Yacht I looked like. Happy sailing. Dave Conley Sea Gypsy

Reminds me of another boat name

"Plan B"...I'd love to know the story behind that one.

Small craft

A yacht is a pleasure craft. Call it a yacht. It's like the difference between 'boat' and 'ship' in the Navy... someone may correct me but I always understood that a 'boat' is not self-contained-- it's like a PT boat or something, that needs a tender to come home to. It does not make ocean crossings itself. Submarines used to have 'sub tenders' because they fell into this category and to this day they are called 'boats' and not 'ships'. In the typical Cherubini way of down-playing everything, we always called everything a 'boat'. I got so naively spoilt by 'cruising yachts' that I once waved over to a couple on a nice 32-footer on the Chesapeake and called, 'Nice little boat!' I am sure they were offended-- I was on a Cherubini 44 at the time-- but even that could become VERY SMALL under the right conditions and I honestly never thought of it as 'big' in any way. I could stand on the dock, put two hands on the bulwark, and turn the bow out-- is that a BIG boat? I swear if I'd ever sailed Ticonderoga or something it'd be a mere 'boat' by the end of the trip too. Still it's nice to think of owning a 'yacht' sometimes too. JC 2

Sailboat or Yacht

The government of Mexico considers any boat power or sail to a be a yacht if it is 25 feet and over. The Federales will gladly tell you so when they hail you to heave to, so that they may check your papers. That isn't all they will check either. Was not a fun experience.
