Crazy Dave, not sure what you mean by turning the straps. I trailered a cat 22 to Pensacola a few years ago and used a strap. The thin part of strap pointed towards the wind but still had a lot of vibration in them. Yes it marked my hull up some. Maybe wrap them in some type of sock/sheet?

Foam placed under the straps against the hull in places where the straps run close or touch the hull minimizes vibration caused chaffing of the hull. Keep foam mostly under the strap so the relative wind does not catch the foam and work it loose. Drive 5 miles, inspect tires, wheel bearings, shifting loads, loosened straps... Remember shift happens.

Have a look at the picture I posted. The straps have a twist in them between the rub rail and the trailer frame. This keeps the strap from oscillating in the wind. This can cause the strap to beat against the hull, and it will mar the finish pretty quickly, and while it's easy to buff out, it should be avoided.

Instead of six individual pads, or adding two more, you might consider one long 2 X 6 (8 to 10 feet long) attached to the tops of your existing uprights. Much more surface area for greater support.

This does not provide enough adjustment and can create pressure points between the supports. If the material in the hull is as thin as has been suggested, then not being able to control the pressure at each point might cause grief. Adding a bunk assumes you're following the contour of the hull.

I guess I figured the original poster was smart enough to know that once he installed a 2 X 6 on the uprights the uprights would then have to be extended up so the wood actually made contact with the hull. So far this system has worked for over 20 years on our trailer sailer. Trailer bunk.jpg

I have a 2x12 board installed for the keel to rest on. For those that know about the 272's wing keel, is this too wide? I don't want to put any pressure on the wings and break them.

Call me Sunday about 5 pm your time. I go to bed at 8 or sometimes before shutting phones off when I do as I am a light sleeper. Have been working hard before the rains set in this past week cleaning up brush and back so if I see any critters jumping across the drive I have some notice on the driveway up the mountain. I have had a couple of bears jump in front of me but kept my distance.

still have suggestions for you for example one rear tie should be from the aft say behind the rear mooring cleats forward to an attachement on the trailer to prevent any movement backwards. You probably learned a lot along the way home. Was wondering if you did add a board to the keel tray to prevent any chafing or bending of the wing keels. Now I understand why you never returned my call. I did send you my phone number

could not tell if one of the yellow straps was across the mast.

Added a 2x12 to the tray. Who ever built the trailer made it a perfect fit with height and width.
However the keel never made it to the 2X12. The stands where too tall to sit the boat down on the trailer. We had to add 10" square blocks topped with a couple 2x6's under the keel to get it high enough for the stands. Said they did it all the time. I screwed everything down so it could not move. The mast is attached independent of the straps across the boat. Two ropes and 2 ratchet style straps holding it down. The trailer does need more supports on it. The hull has pushed in just a bit but not much. Plan to add some temp supports today until I can get my trailer modified for the boat. All in all it went really well. Truck and trailer handled the load very well. Always drove speed limit along the way at times doing 70 mph, mostly 65 mph. Don't have any reservations heading down south once I get the trailer and boat ready for the trip!
