Two rescued after wind and waves capsize sailboat off Tobermory
TOBERMORY — Two sailors were rescued after high waves capsized their large sailboat and it ran aground on a shoal near Tobermory after dark Saturday evening.
Earlier that evening, two Toronto-area boaters were thrown from their small boat in high waves on Lake Huron just north of the mouth of the Sauble River near Oliphant.
Both men were wearing lifejackets, Ontario Provincial Police report. They were rescued by two people on personal watercraft and brought to shore unharmed before police and the Coast Guard arrived.
Farther north, two other sailors had a much more dangerous ride. They were planning to cross the lake for Michigan when the weather turned, provincial police report.
Between 9 and 10 p.m. they ran into high winds and waves and turned for Tobermory for shelter. The boat was hit by a series of waves, overturned, drifted and grounded off Baptist Harbour in Northern Bruce Peninsula.
The Coast Guard, provincial police, North Bruce Fire Department and the Royal Canadian Air Force responded to their mayday radio calls.
Police hiked to the remote location as a Coast Guard vessel left from Tobermory. The grounded boat was out of reach of the Coast Guard and a water rescue was impossible, police say.
Officers called for the two people aboard the boat to swim; officers waded into the water the carry them to shore. An air force Cormorant rescue helicopter then carried them to a hospital in Owen Sound for treatment of hypothermia. They were held in hospital and are expected to make a full recovery.
The wrecked boat is not a hazard to shipping, police said. It will be removed when possible.
